Browning Auto-5 'Whippit' project

I did me '53 Auto 5 to 19" barrel and only took an inch off the butt.

Nice.

Here's the candidate for the chop taken apart for a clean:

It's not 18.5 and 26'' overall it's either one of them.
I'd say no one could argue if you had both but totally legal.

Semi's are different than pumps. With a semi it has to be both. If the barrel is manufactured shorter than 18.5, the gun would be restricted. If you cut it shorter than 18.5 yourself, the instant it goes on the gun it's prohibited

Will shortening the barrel require any changes to the recoil mechanism? I suppose since the barrel has less mass, it will accelerate faster, so would the "heavy load" friction lock configuration be appropriate even for light loads?

Wow...those shortened A5's look pretty ###y!
Gonna have to do a project like this myself.

Whats the best way to re-install a front sight onto these after the shortening? Drill and tap...silver solder a new post???
Be nice to have a rear peep sight as well.

Drill and tap is the method I have used in the past.
Works very well!
I rescued an old dead Model 12 with dented muzzle.
The barrel I cut back to 20" and drilled and tapped it for a brass bead. I've put many shells through it both slug and buck and it has never come loose or had any issues.

Step one done:

At 18.75" the barrel is too long for my small lathe so it was roughed with a hacksaw then a power drill tool was made to finish it with a Delrin rod that fits exactly in the muzzle, mounting a Dremel grinding disk.

I'll need to add a new bead at some point too.

Now for the stock, I'm sort of having second thoughts because it looks pretty good as it is.

Thats going to look great when done. (Already does)
What city are you in? I would love to check it out when your done :)

20/20 hindsight - it might be better to locate the new bead before cutting...

I'm not sure I understand, did you mean use the old bead to line it up correctly?

A couple of thousand kilometers to the East of you I'm afraid but I'll be sure to post plenty of pictures and maybe videos of the rest of the progress.

The old bead shows where top dead center of the barrel is. Useful reference point when locating the new bead position on a cylindrical surface.

Casey at TacOrd shortened my A5 barrel to 19", the buttstock to 12" and installed a KickEez pad, and it runs like a raped ape with birdshot, as wekk as low recoil buck and slugs using the light load configuration.

There wasn't enough meat in my barrel to thread for chokes...

Finally mustered the courage to chop the stock and I'm glad I did, added a couple of threaded inserts, rubbed tung oil into the cut segment and finished off with a 1/8" aluminum plate.

Doubtless not the best of ideas for my shoulder but in the spirit of a "whippit" gun I figured it would have been preferable if butt-stroking was required.

Besides, can't be worse than a Kar98K, right?
