building a 500 Jeffery. P14

Alright guys, I finally got around to getting the bedding finished and the cross bolts installed and proofing it. I used factory Norma ammo 570gr bullet at 2200 fps, I fired 2 rounds remotely with OILED cases, I wiped the chamber with a Q-tip covered in 10w30 and coated each bullet in 10w30 before firing. the cases look perfect, you would almost think i just pulled the bullets.

in the series of pics you will see the setup and the results of the firing and recoil, also the butt stock indents on the log from the recoil and the cases them selves.

now to add some iron sights, paint the barrel black and call her done.

Pic 1 is the setup, the vice is hand tight to keep the rifle upright, it slides around very easy, next to no hold on the barrel
Pic 2 is the 3 bullets getting ready to go
Pic 3 is a loaded oiled round
Pic 4 is the aftermath of the first firing, not bad, the bolt opened like the chamber was empty, 100% zero added lift or pull to the bolt
pic 5 is also the aftermath of the first firing different angle
Pic 6 is the aftermath of the second round fired, this time I just set the barrel on the vice like it was a rest, clearly the gun jumped pretty good.
Pic 7 is another pic of the second firing aftermath
Pic 8 is the log that was stopping the rifle, you can see the flat head screw from the butt plate on the second shot location
the rest are of the cases for visual comparison

your telling me lol, its the steel butt plate that scares me. my 460 Weatherby weights 8 pounds 8 oz and it has a limb saver on it, when I shoot it with a Tshirt on I can read "Limbsaver" on my shoulder for a few hours after lol.

This 500 Jeffery weights 10 pounds right on.

Make sure someone is there to video you shooting a rapid fire string from that gun. It is necessary to ensure proper feeding in case something is charging you. Then you can determine which is truly more dangerous. The animal or the gun. :)

I will, that sounds like it may rattle me a bit but it will hold 2 in the mag and 1 in the chamber so ill do a 3 round sting aimed at 3 different buckets of water. I hope to do that tomorrow. we will se how it does and how my shoulder does

Cool to see it up and running. Did you ever sort out the loading port?

Please add a recoil pad so I can stop cringing though lol. My shoulder hurts just thinking about it. My finger is having phantom pains too thinking about the dogleg bolt smashing into it. You are a braver man than I am

We shall see tomorrow how much it hurts. I plan on shooting 3 back to back to back. Ill post the video for sure.

Conor_90 sorry what issue with the loading port are you refering to? My 460 weatherby had one as i cant eject loaded cases over 91mm. But this rifle loads and ejects fine with factory OAL ammo

Lol we shall see about the bolt tomorow

I must be losing my mind; I thought you had a video up where you had to load the rounds into the magazine tilting them in some weird way. Maybe the issue was with the magazine

Oh i do have a video showing me loading them in a similar fashion as a removable mag. Thats how the rifle works. I use the feed rails as mag lips to hold the single stack of rounds

I have to put them semi into the chamber then push down and slide them back in to the mag

The 500 Jeffery is known for being hard to make feed well and this is a pain to load but feeds flawless

So I got a video of me shooting it today. I fired 3 factory Norma rounds. I forgot one ear plug so I had to stop and out that in before firing it, on the 3rd round I fumble it a little and doesn't feed ideal but I'm not sure why I was so slack on working the bolt, I guess was wondering if anything hurts or looking at the cases coming out for any issues.

its really not bad to shoot, personally I wouldn't shoot it from a bench but honestly it is not bad, no bruises or marks on my shoulder at all. teeth felt fine eye balls didn't pop out. the 10 pound rifle really helps it. my 8 pound 460 Weatherby is quite a bit more lively to shoot and does cause a little throbbing and limp arm feeling. This is honestly no issue, as big as it is it feels like a slower boom, there is no crack to it when the recoil comes.

thanks Bill338 for taking the video
