Building a Classic Sporting rifle

Thanks, I'm looking forward to seeing the end result as well, its been a while coming now.

I got a few more pick from the guy finishing my stock, Wayne.

he has a few things left to do, like the checkering, stock oval inlay and the finish.

then once I get it back I have to fit the tang safety internals, install the barrel rib, rear and front sights, sling swivel on a barrel band and one in the butt stock

send the barrel nut, grip cap, butt plate and mag for engraving, send the barrel and mag for rust bluing and the barrel nut, tang safety, butt plate and grip cap for CCH

then, maybe then it will be pretty much done.

the pics were texted to me so not very high resolution
the stock was wiped with water to show the grain.

DGY, hollowpoint, mctrigger and Decker9, well you guys summed up my thoughts perfectly on this build. I'm very please and even a little surprised how good it looks. I cant wait to see it finished.

Thanks, funny you should mention that, the straight comb and the grip cap being parallel to the barrel are my favorite visual features on the stock.
Well the tang safety looks pretty fancy too.

I also have been following this build with great interest (and low patience!). I've still got one heck of a soft spot for these actions. I eagerly await seeing your finished product!

I got the silver today. I'm going to use a 1910 Canada 50 cent piece to cut up and shape to make the stock oval. It's 90% silver.

So I need to shape it, polish it and get it shipped to Wayne on Monday to inlet it into the stock. He's waiting on this stock oval to finish it.

I honestly can't wait. This build is almost 3 years in the making. I'm glad even though major life changes it's still on the front burner.

Your thread cost me a good deal of money, as I acquired a Lee Speed carbine on a whim I came across in a much more basic style of yours. I need to put some range time in with it on transitioning targets to know what the Lee Speed was about. And I’m a shameless fan of The Ghost and The Darkness.

What did you decide on the bolt handle angle of the dangle, I missed that in the deliberations. The one I bought has the forward hook, but I think I like the “Mauser straight”.

Man, that is awesome to hear. I'm excited for you. the factory lee speed sporting rifles (not the lee speed commercial milspec rifles) are in my eye some of the best handling rifles out there. I love the handling of them. I think it can grown on you if you can get past the idea of lee Enfield's only being crude surplus rifles. a lot of people when I say I'm building a Lee Enfield roll their eyes thinking about a cut up no1mk3.

there are 2 types of lee Enfield bolts.

the straight bolt handle with a round knob that is found on every lee enfield/metford from the 1880's to the 1960's other then the carbines

the carbines are "lmc/lec" (lee metfrod carbine/lee enfield carbine) and they were made from 1894 to about 1903 they have the flat bolt knob and the handle swept ahead. (by far the rarest)

the top pic is both types of bolts. (the carbine bolt has a dust cover on it, the other one doesn't so they look different but the pics mainly to compare the bolt handles)

and the bottom 3 pics are what I ended up doing with my bolt, its finished and these are some pics of it.

also feel free to post a pic or two of your lee speed in this thread, id love to see it.

Sounds good Evan, didn’t want to take it off course, this is the one I picked up and has the carbine features you mention. Looking forward to putting it through its paces and working the bolt fast.

I’ll admit I’m a Mauser guy, through and through for beauty. But these are growing on me, all thanks to your build, some lovely curves and contours in the actions.

I'm sure it has been mentioned, but it is worth pointing out that Evanguy's rifle has the tang safety conversion. Very slick, and mechanically doable.
