Bullet Testing Box

Demonical, I remember reading an article by the same Phil Shoemaker (licence plate "458 WIN") of your sig. line, which had a pic of him atop his "bullet box" up in Alaska- a beached whale! Nothing like a little (recently-) live media for bullet testing.

I'll watch for one of those to wash up along the Athabasca R. :D

yeah! all them mean nasty Rhinos and such in northern Alberta :yingyang:

The world doesn't end at the Alberta border. It seems obvious to me that Demonical is building up to something big and nasty, but even if it were all just playing an elephant gun isn't an elephant gun without elephant bullets.

Demonical,
Are the Hornady solids that you have the "old pattern", "encapsulated solids", or the "new old pattern"?

Demonical,

You might want to nail some mesh in the front part to slow the big chunks of fluidized paper from splattering all over the place......Not pretty after a few shots from 416's or 458's!

Solids will rip end to end of your paper filled box. I've shot them through 4 feet of fire wood blocks.
Don't use a steel plate. When the petals come off an X they do weird things....Like come out the side of the box!

Yeah I know 5-1/2' isn't much to try to stop solids. I was aware when I built it, that it might not be long enough, since they will get 7' to 8' in an elephant skull. I thought they ought to be slowed sufficiently to at least stop though if I had a plate of steel there.
Maybe I can put it on the outside at the back, hinged at the top, that would allow it to give and deflect a bullet down. What about that? A sheet of kevlar...

I'd sure like to recover them somehow.

Is an X bullet going to do 5-1/2' of penetration? Maybe in the big calibers, eh?

Looks good. I might have made the bottom from treated plywood to avoid rotting with all the water and such, but I suppose plywood isn't all that expensive to replace.

I'd jigsaw the front out like a window frame. Then you could use more of the periphery of the newspaper thus decreasing the required supply. What's a real world newspaper? About 14" square? You could probably take 5 or 6 shots in any given batch of media before you'd need to replace it rather than 1 or 2 with a 4 or 6" hole cut in it.

I never thought of treated plywood Silverado...
BUM I like the jigsawed front. I will check that out!

You kind of have to build something and play with it to see the things you coulda done, eh?

Nice test rig. You should build furniture or kitchen cabinets.

Just for reference, I did some testing with my Win Trapper and 45LC. Pushing 325gr GC hard cast FN bullets at 1550fps, it easily shot through 20" of dry phone book (tied together), blew up 2 water filled milk jugs and kept going.

Distance was 45yds.

Oh man, you over-estimate my carpentry "skills"!!

Dumb question but what caliber is the Win Trapper in? Does 45LC mean .45 Long Colt?

45LC = 45 long colt so not monster stopper like what you are planning on shooting.

Performance equals the 454 Casull out of a revolver which have been used to hunt Cape Buffalo - brave souls.

Since a few guys are looking for an update, I am still collecting newspapers for conducting the penetration tests, so all I've got for now is these pics. Not ready to go just yet.
Kind of ambitious test, but I do intend to fire every one of these bad boys into the box... it's gonna take some time.

Here's what the box looks like after cutting the "windows" and installing the threaded rod for compressing the paper. My wife and my buddy Glen, caught in the camera lens...

Make sure you get velocities for the test loads too. I think one of the 9.3x62 guys should contribute to the test too.

Oh yeah...shoot the 416's first. Inquiring minds with buffalo hunts in the palnning want to know!

Oh man, I can't get past the Lund boat.........LOL

Just kidding, the box is cool!

But seriously Demonical, I'm in Athabasca.......if you like walleye, let me know and all you have to do is pull that Lund up here and I'll show you the hot spots on Calling Lake! :D
No need to bring the camper, you can doss down in our spare room. Calling is about a 30 min drive from town and it's a great walleye lake. I'll show ya how we catch em back home in Saskatchewan at places like Tobin Lake.......

Bring the box and your guns and I'll take you out to our range (I'm a member of course) too for some test firing. The rifle side has 100 and 200 yard and there's rarely anybody there..........
