I'm looking forward to Neo joining! He got a beauty.
Sorry to keep you waiting -- since I got home, about all I've done is cut, trim, grind, wrap, cut, trim, grind, wrap, cut, trim ... you know the drill
It's already been said in this thread that nothing ruins a moose trip like shooting a moose. But I think there are a few other things that qualify as well, such as:
a) Someone forgetting to pack a stove for the wall tent. Fortunately, we're a creative bunch!
b) Having one of the 2 argos in camp blow a transmission.
c) Having the second argo find a beaver run that the driver missed and sinking (yes, sinking) the machine in a lake. Did I mention the other machine having a blown transmission? So the sunk one stayed that way for 3 days, with the engine compartment filled with water, until we could get a new tranny and do a field install on argo #1.
d) Spending the better part of a day pulling spark plugs, spinning water out of the engine, draining the gas tank, pulling plugs and spinning some more, etc. etc. etc. until argo #2 came back to life.
e) Having a large pack of 10-12 wolves howling up a storm within a few hundred yards from camp all night before the first morning of hunting. That'll get the moose moving for sure! LOL!
f) Having a grizzly claim the gut pile of my bull, which dropped about 700 yards from camp (and a meat pole with 4 moose quarters hung in it...)
g) Having a good dump of snow on September 30th that stays with you right through to the hunt's conclusion on Oct. 9th.
When all is said and done though, I guess it's still always the same. Nothing ruins a moose hunt like shooting a moose. And nothing makes it as magnificent as shooting a moose
We found him 2 minutes into our first morning, with wolf howls still echoing across the lake. He was with 2 cows, all of them right against the shoreline on the far side of the lake -- presumably, they were thinking that water was about to provide a much needed sanctuary. It was a fair poke (393 yards on the rangefinder), but there was simply no way to get closer without swimming. Once again, my favourite 30-06 proved that a well placed shot with a Barnes 168 grain TSX can do just about anything you can reasonably ask of it.
52" spread, and my personal best to date.
Gotta run and get back to work. Still not done the cutting, trimming, grinding, wrapping, cutting, trimming ...
