Hey all,
excuse my ignorance, I know quite little on this subject, but I'm looking for a foreward handgrip to attach to my C7, something like this:

Any ideas/recommendations? How much would it end up costing? I'd like to "customize" my C7 a bit, but I'm not exactly sure what to do. Any tips? What are CF members allowed to mod?

Thanks,
-Rohann

The one pictured in the SOPMOD poster is a Knight's Armament VFG. You can get one new for about $40. I have one and it works. Mine was "customized" by simply wrapping a SureFire pressure switch with some O.D. guntape.

The point of buying one? Well I'm not sure if you can only use it on exercises, but if that were the case, I'd wait till I go to A-Stan before buying one. And if it's only $40...

in my unit first you need to buy your own set of handguards for your rifle,
apparently the recoil damages the issued ones,
Then your gonna need to buy yourself some sort of add on rail kit, unless the handguards you bought have rails on them,
Then you can buy the vertical foregrip and attach it to the rail, as well as a bunch of other accessorys,
The best approch is to buy a set of handguards, get a rail kit, nice cheap foregrip and a surefire light. then just switch off your handguards at the begining and end of Ex.
And anything still on your rifle when you turn it into the weapons lockup is considered Fair game for the weapons techs.
I would be INCREDABLY Surprised if you were allowed to have a bunch of non-issued $hit tacked on the your rifle in garrison,
Of course these rules vary from unit to unit,
and the higher rank you are the more you can get away with.
BTW how long have you been in?

I see your a reservist so the handguards are about all I'd expect you to be able to do if anything at all,
a few years back some guys were switching off the butt stock for a collapsable one,
I have a Sargeant who uses the old Iron sight carry handle sometimes, But I've never seen anyother reservist able to play around with the optics in Canada,
and I've heard tales of a LSSR (thunder bay) running his own Civvie upper on a Cf lower, most people laugh this off as a myth. But apparently there soo far off the grid that they can get away with most everything.

I haven't been in for very long (I'm sure it shows :)), but would like to spiff up my C7 if it's allowed. I wouldn't go as far as to try and change the upper or anything.
Do you have any recommendations as to who makes the mentioned kit and where to buy it? Even if I couldn't leave that stuff in garrison, it would be ok to just swap it when going on some sort of ex (like a range shoot or Cougar Salvo), wouldn't it?

Like it was mentioned earlier, you'll have to buy a set of handguards to mount that foregrip. If you want to avoid buying anything altogether you can take the rear grip handle on the C9 butt, remove it and screw it onto the existing/issue handguards of your C7, it works as I've done it although you might find it a bit far forward. Of course all this really comes down to your unit and what they'll allow. Try this first, if your section commander, CSM, RSM don't freak out then go out and buy the better setup.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Who do you recommend asking first? I've asked one of the "higher-up" administrative master-cpls (I believe he does marksmanship instruction as well) and he said it's fine but you can only use the parts on exercises.

As far as "where to buy" and "how much" goes, what companies would you recommend?

KevinB: I know you have quite a bit of experience in this region (I noticed your posts on army.ca), so what would you recommend and what had they let you mod in your experience?

+1 on the set up Dangertree sugests. My troops are using this set up here and have had no problems with it. I myself have richer tatses and have decked out my C8SFW with a little more than the issue parts. It is really up to the individual. All of us here have some sort of add on to our personal rifles. From grips to rails to optics. If it works well, then use it. But what do I know, I'm only a Sgt.
YMMV,
Hoddie.

I've run KAC M5 and M4 RAS's

M5 RAS about $350USD

M4RAS - $275 USD

and TD and KAC grips.

IF your into civilian shooting too and issued a C7A1/2 -- getting a KAC M5 is not a bad idea (but pricey).

The C9 grip is the cheapest method -- but be careful a rail and grip on a plastic handguard can give you enough leverage to rip the handguard off -- I know a Sgt (not Hoddie) who ripped his off during a firefight -- and swore by real rails after that

hoddie: You can probably do and probably know a heck of a lot more than me. I'd love to be able to mod the hell out of a C7, but I'm a weekend-warrior (excuse the expression :)) private!

If you don't mind me asking, what regiment/unit are you in?

KevinB: I'll take a look at the KAC M5 grip as well, thanks for the recommendation. If it's overly pricey, do you have anything else in mind a bit cheaper? Heck, I may go with something good, as I can just take it along with me if I change units or something.

EDIT: I looked at some pricing for the KAC M5 Rail, and it's pretty expensive. Do you need that specific rail to mount the KAC Forward Pistol Grip?

Thanks,

I've got a KAC M5 RAS on my 20" A4 clone. It's a well-engineered product and the top rail will maintain zero. Non free-floated but it's fine for a general purpose rifle and will install just like the factory handguards.

thats pretty cool lol hmmm i wonder if when i enlist if i'll be allowed to mod in my regement any one in Ont-R or the in another ottawa battle group regiment?

New vertical grip is now available for issue. You will start seeing it on the streets likely in the new year....comes with mounting kit....I will dig up the pictures.....

Cheers
