A Cameron man is among eight men who have been fined a total of $30,000 for poaching moose off the Old Hastings Road in Faraday Township, the Ministry of Natural Resources said.
The men were members of Bancroft’s Bear Shanty Hunt Camp. They pleaded guilty to numerous charges under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.
The investigation involved 30 MNR officers, the ministry states.
Justice of the Peace Barry Moran heard the case in Bancroft’s Ontario Court of Justice on June 2.
Lionel Towle, of Whitby, pleaded guilty to killing a bull and cow moose without a licence, possessing and transporting the killed animals, making a false statement to a conservation officer and displaying a void licence.
He was fined a total of $9,000 for the offences, his rifle was forfeited to the Crown and his hunting licence was suspended for two years.
Richard Towle, of Bancroft, pleaded guilty to unlawfully hunting a bull moose, unlawfully possessing and transporting the moose and using and permitting a void licence to be displayed.
He was fined a total of $6,000 and his hunting licence was suspended for two years.
Craig Towle, of Cavan, and Deane Card, of Bancroft, both pleaded guilty to possession and transporting the bull and cow moose Lionel Towle illegally killed.
They were each fined a total of $2,000 and their hunting licences were suspended for one year.
Randy Wood, of Bancroft, pleaded guilty to possession and transporting the bull moose Lionel Towle illegally killed and making false statements to a conservation officer. He was fined a total of $4,000 and his hunting licence was suspended for a year.
Paul Varty, of Cameron, and Paul Neath, of Stouffville, both pleaded guilty to possession and transporting the bull moose Lionel Towle illegally killed and making a false statement to a conservation officer.
Vary was fined $3,500 and his hunting licence was suspended for a year.
Neath was fined $1,500.
An eighth man pleaded guilty to possessing and transporting the bull and cow moose that Lionel Towle illegally killed. He was fined a total of $1,500 and his hunting licence was suspended for one year.
Court heard conservation officers conducting a camp check at the Bear Shanty Hunt Camp spoke to Lionel Towle Oct. 24, 2008.
Towle had four moose quarters from a bull moose he said he killed during their hunt, court heard.
He said his brother, Richard, tagged the moose and it was the only moose the Bear Shanty Hunt Camp killed, court heard.
MNR officers found the remains of two additional adult moose, court heard, and DNA samples were collected and the MNR’s canine unit was brought in. Two spent 30-06 casings were found near the kill site.
Court heard that it was Paul Varty who shot a bull moose on the opening day of the moose hunt, for which the camp used its only moose tag.
A few days later Lionel shot an additional bull and cow moose, court heard, for which the group had no licences.
The Bear Shanty camp re-used the original bull tag on the second bull and gave away the cow to a hunt camp located south of the Bear Shanty Hunt Camp. Members of the camp who accepted the cow moose from Bear Shanty Hunt Camp will appear in court on July 7, 2009, to answer to charges laid against them.

Now that I've read the whooollllee thing, it sounds like they're hunters, and have a hunt club but are shooting more than the tags they have.

And THAT is poaching!

At the very least, they should lose their licenses for 5-10, IMHO.

The author of this article needs to go back to high school, the court heard. Rookie at the desk !

Back to the meat of the issue, the punishment should have been a lot worse than that. These stories make me sick. We recently had a bunch of poachers get caught here in South Sask and it made me smile. There had been rumours about them for years and as soon as the news broke about them getting caught, it made me feel a bit better.

yeah its 30k for a few moose, but how much do you think this cost tax payers?

it would suck to be the other camp that took the cow, i wonder if they used one of thier tags on it.... good on the MNR catching these fellows that make it harder for us legitimate hunters

well i could imagine the temptation on last day of moose camp and nothing hanging in the camp, a cow tag and your neighbor tells you hey one of our guys just shot a cow and we dont have a tag, you want it?....now thinking about a full freezer i could see how someone could be talked into it... Not saying this is how it happened or that it is right or I agree with what they did.

It didnt cost taxpayers a dollar more than it wouldve if these officers were stitting at there desk surfing the net. They are all on salary, this is a good use of taax dollars. However, setences and license suspensions were way to light. I agree with the minimum 10 yr license suspension

I was just reading a previous post in here that mentioned a poacher got fined for 3k and banned from hunting for one year... and yet these mofos get a 30k fine? WTF!

Well i know one of the fellas personally. NOT A CLOSE CLOSE FRIEND though. If you catch my drift! I know of two of the other guys too! Let's just say this was a time where they were caught! Let's face it guys, most of us these days don't have to hunt to eat! I know these guys don't either! LOOKS GOOD ON THEM! They could have bought alot of grocerys for that change. JMO!

Dave.
