Can you hunt Coyote with a shotgun in ont

Yes, just watch the north of French River and Algonquin park restrictions as well as big game season limits.

keep in mind that Ontario game laws require the shotgun to be plugged no matter what you are hunting with it. three rounds total

Um No, this is so wrong. Those are migratory game regulations. People should seriously not open their mouths unless they know their regs. Semis are limited to 5, pumps as many as the mag will hold for coyotes.

you better check again. Ontario doesn't care what your hunting with a shotgun, it's a three round total, unless they just changed the regs

2017 Ontario Hunting Regulation Summary
page 25, third paragraph down under firearms
" you must plug a semi-automatic or repeating shotgun so that it will not hold more than a total of three shells in the chamber and magazine combined"

I've spoken to more that one CO about this

but your right about one thing though, people should not open their mouths unless they know the regs

"Semi-automatic"

I stand by what I said about pumps, and about speaking about things you don't understand...

This is right from the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act which (trumps) the Regulation Summary.

And a "pump" is considered a "repeating shotgun" and must be plugged.

[h=4]Shotguns[/h]19 A person shall not hunt with a shotgun unless the shotgun has been permanently plugged or altered so that it cannot hold a total of more than three shells at one time in the chamber and magazine. 1997, c. 41, s. 19.

In Ontario;

Three rounds max in a shotgun, if you are hunting ANYTHING.

In some other provinces that law only applies for certain types of bird hunting.
But in Ontario; It's even if you're using shotgun slugs to hunt deer with. There's no exceptions.

I stand corrected. Guess this was updated recently. Or maybe I just misread it all these years. Where this gets confusing is they allow 5 rounds for centrefire rifle hunting moose/deer etc. Under deer/moose regulations says you're allowed to use shotguns, no cap....I will dive into this a bit more.

You missed it all these years. Almost every province and State has the 3 shot hunting max, as the Migratory Game Birds Act is Federal - actually, a North American treaty going back many moons. Canada, the U.S. and Mexico are signatories. I'm not aware of any jurisdiction that allows more than 3 shots for hunting, but I have to admit I haven't spent a lot of time researching the topic.

Lol your all sorts of wrong... Semis are restricted to 5 pumps can have unlimited yes... But while hunting all shotguns are restricted to 3... The only thing I hunt is turkey and coyote with a 870 and I've been stopped and checked twice and my brothers dating a girl that's gonna be a MNR... It's 3 bud... As for the center fire rifle being allowed to have 5 that's cuz it's a rifle not a shotgun

There is a province or two that allow more than three when loaded with slugs, possibly buckshot as well, but not sure about that. BC is one, maybe Alberta as well. The Migratory Game Bird Treaty is a Federal treaty, as you say, but the administration of at least that part of it dealing with shotgun capacities when hunting migratory game birds is left to the provinces. Ontario and others have decided that it's just easier and leaves less wiggle room for poachers to squeeze through to limit all shotguns, for all hunting to three rounds combined. It's been this way for as long as I can remember, and I've been hunting since the 60's
