Can you own too many vanilla hunting rifles?

I did a major purge and kept only those that I use. I still have two to go. A very nice condition Model 12 Trap and a Ruger #1V in 22-250. I took the $ from those I sold so far and put half into two trap guns, a brand new Rizzini combo which is on order through Prophet River and a used Perazzi TM-1. The other half of the $ went into RRSP's. I kept my Grandfathers Winchester Model 71 for big game, a Ruger Mini-14 for varmints, a Ruger 10/22 for gophers and plinking, my Grandmothers .410 Iver Johnson for sentimental reasons and my 101 DU 12 ga for waterfowling.

The scary part of trying to downsize is this: I will be congratulating myself for having sufficient maturity and will power to have gotten my collection down to X number of firearms. Then an ad comes along in the EE for something I've always wanted to try, or maybe something that I once had and regret selling, or maybe just an interesting chambering, or something that has an outstanding chunk of walnut on it, or...or...or...and I find myself punching the "Private Message Poster" button and composing an offer to buy. So I take a breath, mentally #####-slap myself and wonder why I am even thinking about getting another plain ol' rifle when I've just sold a bunch of plain ol' rifles, simply because...well, because they were just more plain ol' rifles! :)

There is nothing wrong with keeping a "placeholder" in your collection for one you want to try........ I have that, and just filled it with a .257 Roberts in Ruger #1......... I think the problem happens when you have too many "placeholders" that never leave the nest.....

At the end of the day, as much as I talk about a "common sense" collection..... As long as you are piling up good quality guns, you will likely get your money back down the road or more..... My guns have done better than my mutual funds and rrsp's over the last 5 years.....

I have found that the older I get the more I purge the masses of old junk rifles, the replace 10 shlt guns with one of high quality. Shifting quantity for quality

You might be able to smelt the metal and make interesting trinkets like pitchforks and chains...

That's exactly what the turds who control the UN want us to do, and the chains are quickly tightening around our collective necks.:(

For me, I'll keep some basic rifles that serve me well and one 'er two that have more bling, but only if they shoot true.

Well I'm not sure I even want to enter this conversation...........my last count was 185 and still counting. I have no desire to thin out the vanilla........or chocolate, or strawberry, or maple walnut, or........well you get the idea. I'm with Dogleg, I only have rifles that I have used and then there are those I intend to use and then there are those I will never use but love anyway.............I just absolutely love sporting guns, handguns, shotguns not so much, I only have about a dozen of them.
Dogleg when we meet in Hell I think they are going to have to call an election..........chances are I'll already be in control when you get there.
I have expensive guns and not so expensive guns, I have multiples in the same cartridge (six 243s last count, several 375s, many 30-30s) but not in identical guns, because that would be redundant. I have a 66 Winchester that I will never fire, but I hold it and stroke it and try to get it to tell me stories from it's past. I just love guns..........
I do a little hunting as most on here are aware and I have my favorites for these purposes, then I have a few wildcats just 'cause I love to #### around and try different sh!t. This part of the hobby feeds the tinkerer in me and the quest for new knowledge and just keeps me busy and out of the bars and out of trouble. Then I have some relatively high end customs which I do shoot but really just love to caress and show off. I have a few just for the eccentricity of them, like my 50 BMG, a couple SKSs, a double 28 ga, 378 Wby etc.
It is my opinion that a man/woman can not have too many toys (guns), what else gives me a reason to get up in the morning..........
I now have my lathe in it's final resting place and have my 458 barrel all chucked up and dialed in and am going to cut it out to my designed 458 on the 416 Ruger case with the shoulder moved ahead slightly and improved to 40 degree. What will it do that the Lott won't? Absolutely nothing, but it entertains the hell out of me to see how well it will work. Firearms to me, are not just hunting tools. They are a statement as to the evolution of mankind, the ingenuity of their design, the quality of the workmanship, they are just an amazing device.
HHHHMMMMMMM..........does the term obsession mean anything to anyone out there, I can't help it. I do occasionally sell the odd one, usually grabbed with out thought, an impulse buy, that I have little to no interest in and no use for it. It happens from time to time but by no means is it a common practice in my house. Besides when anarchy strikes I will be in good stead and all the antis and greenies will be singing a different tune.............
I have no desire to purge myself of any of my firearms, besides look at the fun my boys will have when I tip over, they can flog them all and buy a Ferrari, or two..........at which point I'll likely be seeing them soon...........

Sadly, Douglas, this ^ only seems reasonable to this particular limited audience. :)

I could live in a friendly dictatorship, as long you have the place running smoothly when I get there. For instance, all the bushnells and 100 yard ranges would have to go. Few would recognize hell without all the 3200s tormenting everyone for eternity. I suppose if that demand wasn't met it would be a relatively easy bunch to over-throw. ;) Even clandestine forces would be easy to identify by their scope cuts.

I find vanilla boring. I don't own a single .308 Win, .30-06, or .270 Win. My mostest vanilla cartridges are a .22-250 Rem and a .300 WSM. My other rifles are .260 Rem, 7mm SAUM, .35 Rem, .35 Whelen, .375 Ruger, .444 Marlin, etc...

Dogleg....I'm thinking when you arrive maybe we could just partner up which would free up some of my time, from the mundane administrative duties, to do more shooting. Absolutely no Bushnells or Salvage bolt guns or Mossbergs or 270s of any flavor allowed..........

Yeah, no welfare guns or scopes. The place is sounding better already.

MMM..........how can you expect to be taken seriously considering where you live...........it's nearly as bad as Toronto...........:d:d:d

270 shooters all go to Heaven, where there are no guns, because they never really had any in the first place...............
