Changed to 2014-2015 Wterfowl hunting thread!

We get lots of ruddy ducks down here. They always skirt the outside of a decoy spread and fly fast and low right on the water
The Rio shells work great

That blind above is sweet

Can 3 1/2 be reloaded ?

Yes, but the performance gains seem minimal for the investment needed above and beyond 2.75 or 3" loads, just my opinion. Check out Duckhuntingchat. com and the refuge, as well as shotgun world .com there are a lot of folks on those sights pursuing some truly impressive performance steel loadings and other shot options. I wish we had the availability of shot options and pricing close to what Americans have at their disposal it would make reloading for waterfowl even more interesting.

I will be heading up to the Lake Simcoe area of Ontario for my first ever Canada/cackling goose hunt next Thursday morning. I will be using 3" BB Remington Nitro-Steel out of a 12 gauge 870.

You try them them Blue steel from Rio too?

There are lots of Ruddies out here on the sloughs but we don't bother with them, takes a limit of them to fill a taco shell!! ;)

Haha I didn't know they was that small! Kind of teal sized birds?

Good luck brother, them big honkers can be tough birds to bring down. I always get nostalgic when I hear bout people huntin with 870's I used one from the time I was 9 till I was 18, it was longer then I was when I was 9 years old but I killed many a partridge with it!

Used them last year, 2 3\4 and 3 inch 3 shot, got 4 cases waiting for this fall. They work great and at $100.00\case for 3 inch the price is hard to beat.

Holy moley mandingo where you find those at?

Anyone tried Winchester Blindside ammo?

Awesome shot! I tried a box of 2-3/4" #5 just as a swatter for the odd cripple but I ended up usin half the box on birds inside 30 yards decoying and it worked awesome out of my versamax improved cylinder...Mighty expensive though so I never bought em again.

Ruddies aren't much smaller then lesser blue bill. I breast them wrap them in bacon and cook on top burner of bbq then melt cheddar cheese on them add jalapeño pepper slice and serve wit cold Corona
Any duck that requires actually cleaning like cans blacks and mallards I give away. Call me lazy if u want I just don't really like waiting all day for it to cook

I hate to ruin your party but your chances of shooting a cackler on Lake Simcoe at this time of year is about 5,000,000:1 against!! Now resident Canada's? Yes, but Cacklers? No! They have not even shown up here yet and we are on a major flyway for them. They are not usually known to migrate through Ontario in any major numbers.
Out scouting this morning and saw a flock of Specks, the migration is starting!!

No sir not lazy at all just not into waitin I can understand that, that's why when it comes to deer huntin without dog or doggers you can cont me out I don't got the patients to sit there for hours and wait. That's why I dog, plus I see more deer that way...But duck huntin, I can sit there all day and wait for one lonely duck to fly in to miss haha.

I can hunt all day. I sit for an hour then slowly move around but I can wait out an animal. Even called in to work waiting for a sleeping coyote to get up. Boss didn't understand. Got him after a 4 hour wait. But seeing meat over fire I want it now. Knowing its in an oven and I have to wait kills me

Ok you win that's some patients, I understand the food though when I see it cookin I wanna eat it now! I can't smell no more so that's not a problem but I can see it cookin!

A friend offered to take me duck hunting this year, but I have no idea how to clean them. Does anyone have a link to some online resources such as a video?

To breast them find the breast bone and slice down each side and fillet the meat from the plate
Other wise actually pluck the thing up to the neck. Cut off wings and legs then dip in hot wax. Pull off wax then cut open the back and gut it

I will have to settle for Canada geese then ;) It should be fun!

It'll be awesome brother! They're big slow birds and despite what people think ain't much in the brains department either, I have more more then a few first hand experiences to confirm this statement. But as I mentioned before ther're tougher'n stink if you don't hit em in the head!
