I bought some Chinese 7.62 x 39 ammo in gun show. The vendor told me that they are not corrosive. How can I find out ? I thought all Chinese ammo are not corrosive.
Don't waste your money feeding a cheap rifle expensive ammo. just run the corrosive. cleaning your rifle while the missus watches chick flicks is time well spent.
Well, it's only conjecture, but as it concerns the Chinese 7.63 x 39, what colour are the steel cases? If they are all copper-wash coloured cases, then there's a good change that it's corrosive military surplus. If it's the Nornico dark brown coloured steel cases, then likey not corrosive. But, like others have said, why take the chance, just clean anyway.
We all know the Chinese gov. would never lie about anything
I'm going to make an effort to get a couple of the norico bullets and then test the primers for their PH. If anyone has some lying around PM for my address.
I don't want to buy a crate to just test it.
There are 750 rounds in a crate. They are like the Norinco 308 with steel cases. copper coloured and brass primers. There are some numbers on the tin crates. 48/74-85 83-74-9121. Hope someone would know what they are. Thanks.
pull the bullet and powder, chamber the empty primed case and fire it at a steel plate from a few feet away. (wear safety glasses)
leave it outside where it will not get rained on, and come back one or two days later and check for rust on the plate.
Regardless I would clean according to corrosive rules.
EDIT: In case I am not clear, you need to pull the bullet and powder and DISCARD THEM. You will need some sort of bullet pulling device in order to do this test.
Headstamp is the marks on the head of the cartridge case.
If it has Chinese markings, is in tins and the ammo is wrapped in paper I would lay money that it is corrosive. It will likely be made in the 1970's and state such on the headstamp.
