Chinese SKS 五六式 7.62x39 - "French Tickler"

Bought and received one the other day. Looks just like the one in photos; factory 26, serial in 23 million range, parts matching, the one I got definitely looks unissued - the finish is perfect and bore looks untouched.

IF those are surplus rifles and never issued for service, why do they have stock repairs North Sylva? Or does somebody do a bit of mix and match with another batch?

And I still remember those Russian BBQ paint and stock repaired SKS - not really eager getting a stock repaired SKS for that price.

That isn't a service repair. It was done at manufacture to cover an open knit in the wood. Lots of military rifles have these. Ever seen a Finnish mosin? Or a French berthier rifle? These weren't meant for aesthetics.

I worked in a lumber mills for yrs...we always plugged holes in the cedar siding right off the manufacturing line..knots holes small defects etc...wood rifle stocks are no different.. they come off the lathe with small defects and get plugged..doesnt mean they are not new manufacture

i agree , these are not refurb but lets stick with sks. i have never seen any unissued Russian sks or any unissued sks with these type of repairs.

Considering the millions that were produced compared to the number you've actually seen up close your statement is totally irrelevant.

I don't have photos, but when lever arms brought in factory 26 sks' in the late 1990's, I had a couple with similar repairs. One was a pinned spike Bayo, unissued. The other a refurb of an early blade Bayo rifle.

If you ask me, prevalence would depend on the quality of wood they were working with.

Those were good old days for sure. The blade Bayo refurb looked unissued but clearly wasn't. The gas tube was a replacement 3 piece, and the tail end that's under the handguard was spot welded on crooked to the point the piston would not cycle. I had to replace it to get the gun to function. Some other guns at the time were unsafe to shoot, if I remember, the Chinese had stuck pinned barrels into threaded receivers somehow and there were stories of them coming apart, though I never handled one myself.

I'll take your word for it the other must have been a refurb. It looked new and 30 years ago, I had a lesser eye for old rifles than I do now. I didn't own the pinned rifle very long.

I also should have kept theid-2000's 625 and 316 unissued examples I once had. Oh well.

Just ordered one of these new ones from Durham, will post what I get in the mail.

I had a look through my pile and could only find a Russian with a similar repair on a refurb laminate stock. Never noticed it before. 20220919_115806.jpg

yes, good old days. my all time fav SKS was a blade factory 26 but it was clearly refurb cos the gas tube was parked and no serial number on the stock, regardless it was my favorite. im still sad i sold it. bugger.

Just bought one of these rifles from Bullseye North, I went to check them out in person cause I didn’t want to risk ordering online and getting an ugly one, they let me look at a few and they were all very nice, they also let me price match International Shooting Supplies so I got it for $499.99 plus tax :)
