Chinese SKS 五六式 7.62x39 - "French Tickler"

I picked one up from international shooting supplies today. Two of the ones on display had the stock repaired as shown, but in different locations. Repairs look sturdy and the stocks still match the rifle. Aside from the stock "issue" they all looked great.

I think they are factory repairs for small flaws , the guns still appear brand new. Looked at 5 in the store all were mint but three had those small plugs in what appeared to be brand new stocks.

I completely disassembled my SKS. Except the stock, which is arsenal refurbished, the rest of the rifle is brand new (receiver, barrel and gas system) and absolutely immaculate. The rifle was never shot. The color of the stock on my SKS is pretty light like the one in the picture in post #1. As you said, that small repair with a wooden plug is most likely due to previous knot in the wood. This way or the other, it's done very professionally. It doesn't bother me at all. IMHO opinion a nearly brand new, solidly built (military issue), semi-auto rifle, for $620 (with 13% HST) is quite a bargain these days.
I already have another military issue Chinese SKS which I bought several years ago from factory 306. The new one is from factory 26. Now I have a beginning of some sort of collection. :)

Was in gobels in London today. They had 3 of these and priced best I’ve seen at $511. All three were good shape, none had stock repairs or plugs. All matching. 2 stocks finish was a bit gritty but nice wood grain.

The difference of $38 compared to other vendors charging $549 with free shipping basically covers shipping . So, not much difference.

Oh, you mean a pickup in person from the storefront at Goble's. It's 300km drive for me (back and forth). Also, price of gas. No way Jose. That's why I mostly order from those supporting businesses which offer free shipping. For people living in London is surely $38 cheaper.
I've been doing online shopping for a number of years now (over 15?) even from China and some European countries. Honestly speaking, I've never had a major problem like with "a box of chocolates" you nicely described. Perhaps, I'm lucky or what.

i agree with new gun online but unissued surplus is a different story cos it has no warranty. you got a unissued sks with a stock repaired and you think you are lucky then good for you.

A minor stock repair, which is basically nearly invisible on my Type 56 carbine, is completely irrelevant to me. The most important for me is the barreled action and gas system which are brand new. I shoot every rifle or pistol I have in my say "collection". I'm not a collector but shooter. I've been doing this for over 50 years. And a "warranty" on a Chinese Type 56 carbine? You must be kidding!

Jeebus! That is a tactical mini cheek rest. These are special sniper sks.

IF those are surplus rifles and never issued for service, why do they have stock repairs North Sylva? Or does somebody do a bit of mix and match with another batch?

And I still remember those Russian BBQ paint and stock repaired SKS - not really eager getting a stock repaired SKS for that price.

I'd hazard a guess that they didn't hand select pieces of wood for stocks and any imperfections they milled out and plugged. At any rate looks like they were done at assembly and not for export reasons.

That little plug disappoints you? How does the rest of the rifle appear?

No my hand picked russian sks with a bent rear sight and fully drifted front sight disappointed me, so did my cz 75 that was listed as very good to excellent that was fair at best.

Did they look like they were unissued? or used? Always hard to buy surplus online without actually seeing it.
Thanks

There is a Tenda thread about these rifles. It has pictures and testimonials. I suggest you weenies all bent about condition of 40 yr old rifles go there .

Grabbed one from Bullseye with the free shipping. I'm interested to see what shape it's in. It really doesn't matter to me, it'll just get dragged through the bush with its other Chinese and Russian brothers.

All three they had on Thursday looked unissued. No issues with wood or metal. Two of them had some grit in the finish of the wood, just not as smooth as the one I have but still looked like factory fresh.
