Choosing a black rifle

So, I've been looking at black rifles and doing what reading I can for a while now, but my mind still changes fairly frequently on what I actually want.

I've got a few ideas, and while I know there's no definitive answer, and there will be people who will prefer one over the other, I was hoping to get some opinions on what the best choice is here.

To start with, I want a decent, reliable, and accurate AR with EOTech 552 HWS (I don't want a scope, I've already got a scoped rifle). I'm also quite keen on the fore grips that double up as a bipod. I'd prefer non restricted, but I'd probably hunt with a bolt action, so I'm open to restricted if it offers something really attractive over the non-res.

The two rifles that are around the right price, and that I've always had a want-on for are the H&K SL8, and the XCR. The XCR also provides an additional complication in choosing the calibre. My initial feeling was to go for the 7.62 (more power = good?), but now I'm thinking that the 5.56 is cheaper (and probably easier to find, should ammo ever become harder to get hold of), so it may be the smarter way to go.

So, anyone got any opinion on any of the above, or anything I'm missing that might be a better way to go?

That said.....there is a lot to be said for the SL8 made up to resemble the PSG-1.

No, no, I need a decent mid/close range rifle before I need another long range one.

So many wants, so little money.

SAN PE90;
Comes in restricted or non-...
Black or green...
Short, medium or long...
Pricey but nicey!
Cheers
I've also been wanting one of these. However, a little too pricey for me in the near future. I'm basically looking at 4k after putting the EOTech on there.

Totally do-able under $4K if you keep your eye on the EE. You can get a new (or test fired) PE90 for ~$32-3400. Just sayin'... :D
Cheers
Yeah, that was the route I was thinking, then $500 for the EOTech, looking at pretty close to 4k by the time I add a couple of mags to that.

Maybe I'd be better off being patient until I can afford this, though patience was never a strong suit of mine.

Plus the misses would murder me if she ever found out I spent that much on a rifle.

Well bugger, there's a really nice deal on one in EE right now. I wonder if he'd be willing to trade for a kidney....

I have an XCR in .223 and although I love it, I am kicking myself for not getting the 7.62.

Sure, .223 is relatively cheap, but NOTHING in comparison to 7.62. Besides, tests prove it is a superior round for most applications.

I'd go with the XCR of the two you mentioned. I like the option to convert to a different cartridge. 7.62 would be the best cheap-ammo option and then switch either to hand loads (semi-auto 30-30 anyone?) or swap out to a 6.8 SPC for hunting.

Do what I did and sell a few of the things you don't use very often.

I used to own an AR180b, I've used a XCR's and AR15's, and IMHO the SAN PE90 blows them all out of the water in terms of accuracy and quality. Mind you, there are a few thing I don't like about the SAN (mainly not being able to use 10 rnd mags :(), but over all it is the finest rifles I've ever owned. Oh, and one more thing. I bought it used on the EE w/ 1500 rounds down the pipe, and other than the scuff marks by the ejection port the thing looks goddam new.

Unfortunately, right now, my collection consists of a Tikka T3 Varmint, and a Springfield XD .45 Tactical, both of which I use very often. Don't quite have enough of a collection yet to start substituting pieces out....

Does the PE90 come in 7.62, or is it 5.56 only?

AJCrowley, if you're still asking for advice, I'd consider (if I didn't already own a Colt AR) the XCR in 7.62x39. The ammo is very low priced, usually around $200 for a 1120 round case, and often you can find better deals on the ammo. IIRC you can also get the barrel and other parts needed to convert back and forth between .223 and 7.62x39 (I'm looking into that for my AR, but I may just sell it and get an XCR because it's non-res).

Only 5.56mm (PE90) for now, but the 7.62mm (SAPR) is apparently on the way. It appears on Wolverine's 04/10 price list as POR (price on request). It's gonna' be expensive...

:EDIT: oh sorry, you probably meant 7.62x39. That's a no-go, the SAPR will be 7.62x51 (NATO) only.

At that price, it hardly seems worth loading my own.

However, I'm not sure if I'd want to spend that much on a rifle and shoot corrosive through it...I've also seen people talking of non-corrosive bulk ammo (South African ball), but I've not seen any for sale, it all seems to be the corrosive Czech stuff.

Only 5.56 :(

Have you looked into a CZ 858? More of a "Red Rifle" but still really cool.

All you have to do is clean the rifle after shooting to take care of the corrosive problem.
