Christmas Sale GNG Carcano Moschetto

Marstar is likely describing the rifles accurately and gng is likely over-grading by a wide margin. Lesson learned.

I also doubt marstar would half-@ssed cobble 2 rifles together and not disclose it.

Mine arrived yesterday and I picked it up today.

I'm not offended by it, content in fact. Good+ bore and the rest is as you see.

I'll take more better pics later.

That one looks pretty decent Andy. Does the stock match (or force match) the rifle?

I'd saw on the surface it looks superior to both of mine.

Go read the ad - it's still up. Good condition with good to very good bores. Inspected. I have the ad copy from the day I purchased pasted in post 1 of this thread.

Marstar listed some sale carcanos as fair. I did not order a marstar carcano.

I expected an assembled, working rifle. I got a pieced together, partially disassembled rifle not in functional condition out of the box. Would you call that truth in advertising?

Don't be so intellectually lazy, it's not like you.

Edit: GNG'as ad text from the sale reproduced here:

I would rate my bore on rifle no.2 is poor to fair. I would say it's 95% covered in rust that was not minor. See the photos, make up your own mind if I'm being fair or not. Even the inside of the bolt was rusted almost solid and needed significant cleanup. I had to soak some of the parts in evaporust to free them up. Overall condition is poor to fair, and it's a recently assembled parts rifle. Only matching parts are the receiver and barrel.

No, I wouldn't. I saw the Marstar rating and mixed it up with GNG.

They do say most bores are GOOD

GOOD grade rifles are IMHO, bordering on junk and I've never purchased one that was graded Fair or Good, unless they were cheap enough to be PARTST ONLY guns that often had useable boltst and receivers for a build.

Looking at the pics of your rifle and the GNG ad, I would say the condition was way overestimated as well.

Need help identifying these bolts - both maker and variant to which they belong.

Some once belonged to "Cooey Carcanos ".

I have an embarrassing amount of parts and "stuff"......

Andy, the bolt body and the associated parts can be from different makers. Sometimes subcontractors made some of the small bits like firing pins and safeties.

Ideally take pictures in the markings on the bolt handle roots. This is usually where the maker's stamp will be.

Theost common mark is a circle with a crown and a tiny tni inside it. This would be terni manufacture.

Some good info here: https://www.il91.it/cannaculattaealzo.html

I should also mention Andy, many of the cooey carcanos were made from rifles. Some of the bolts in your photo are rifle bolts with bent handles.

Real carbine bolts have kind of a serpentine bend to them, while cooey-bent rifle bolts have a more crude rounded bend.

Hard to tell in the photo, but I think the top 2 bolts in your photo were rifle bolts, possibly others as well.

Yes, I'd say 3-4 are from Cooey Carcanos, so are likely "parts bolts". Given that I paid at most $100 for each gun, and still have 2-3 double trigger assemblies (I sold two on eBay to Americans about 10 years ago for $250 each), I did ok.

Is mine made in 1919?

P.S. the bore is "tight" - slugs to 0.267"+ and a 0.257" bullet will not enter the barrel more than about 1" past the muzzle.

The rifles were listed as being in FAIR condition only. Pretty much what you received.

I'm quite surprised at your response. It's not like you at all.

No, hard no.

I pointed it out before, even the first one was shy from fair.

FAIR: In safe working condition but well worn, perhaps requiring replacement of minor parts or adjustments which should be indicated in advertisement, no rust, but may have corrosion pits which do not render article unsafe or inoperable.

This last one is poor and needs gunsmith work.

I say this is also unsafe to shoot.

Value is around $100. Considering the high shipping cost in Canada, I'd rather burn my hand on the stove than being bothered with something like this.

The last one from Andy looks about in fair condition.

They are neat little rifles, I'm getting too old to get into loading obscure stuff or I would have sourced out a decent one of these.
It's hard to admit, but I kind of think I have enough rifles already, some only get out once in 5 years if they are lucky.

About special requests, we don't do those on a bulk ad like this. But sometimes customers get it anyway. The fairies I suppose.
Now, everyone wants the best one. We often get these:
"My profession is X so send ME the best"
"I'm friends with X, please send ME the best"
"I'm very active on X forum, please send ME the best"
"I have a gun blog, please send ME the best"
We ignore those. People who pay the same price get the same chances, period. Someone got a near mint one in the last days, and someone a rare 1890's receiver. Equal chances for everyone. I don't even allow my friends to pick the best ones. You made lots of requests, but you also wanted to pay the same price as everybody else. Still, as requested I sent you the earliest gun I found that day, a hard to find date since all the WW1 dates together add up to 2-3% of this import. It was also the worst condition one I saw that day, but one can't have everything at 288$. Just how cheap can a rifle born in WW1 be?

No Carcanos have been returned to date so our description must be somewhat accurate. Moreover, apart from gross mistakes and omissions that warranted a refund (it happens), nobody has ever written to say they disagreed with how we rate rifles. It has never happened in 5 years and thousands of guns sold. But mistakes do happen, which is why some customers - 0.4% of them to be exact - choose to use our generous return policy and request a refund (usually before making accusations in the public forums). I've received no such request though, and no request to solve the issue privately.

Normally I would not comment directly on a gun deal, but GNG seems to be claiming I made "a lot of requests" and is implying I claimed to be influential, have a gun blog, etc.

For the sake of complete transparency - this is the word per word request I place in my order when e-mailing my PAL copy to GNG :

Per my comments in the order and by PM on CGN, the last one you sent me was a 1941 Brescia. It was really beat up badly, I’d say it cleaned up to fair. You can see my example in my CGN review here (my CGN handle is Claven2:
https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2338027-Christmas-Sale-GNG-Carcano-Moschetto

I’d really appreciate it if this time you could pick out an early date for me – whatever is the earliest one you have where the stock isn’t beat up as badly as my last one. I’ll cross my fingers about getting a cleaning rod in the butt this time like some guys are reporting

If it’s easier than shipping, PERSON at STORE is a good friend of mine, you could drop it off there for me if that’s easier. PERSON I KNOW mentioned you sometimes do that.

I'll let that speak for itself on whether I asked for anything unfair, tried to apply undue influence, or refused to pay any handpicking fees, etc. (the capital letters are just me removing the names of people and places that don't merit being aired in public)

I appreciate your participating in this thread, I wish more dealers did that when their products are being discussed.

Received shipping notice from Marstar today. I’m hoping that since I ordered one with adjustable sights, I get an early dated version. Been a long time since I had a firearm sent in the mail, looking forward to it!

I bet the shipping price was a kick in the nads if it's been a while for you! It's crazy how much parcel costs have climbed.

I agree. Never had any issues with Tradex, their “ good” condition firearms that I bought from them were in excellent condition to my eyes…

I actually questioned the original shipping charge, as they had mentioned they were having improper calculations, and had it reduced by $12. A CGN member mentioned this to me, and I’m glad that he did!
( many thanks fritzhanzel!)
