I am very close to buying a Remington 700 special edition in .270 win. One of the big selling features of this rifle is that it has a detachable box magazine. I had a Ruger in the .270 win and I miss it dearly, but I DON'T miss the hinged floor plate. If ruger produced a rifle with a detachable magazine I would buy it. Why is it that hardly any manufacturers aside from say Savage manufacture rifles with only the hinged plate and no detached mags?

i cant stand hinged floor plates. all i can see them good for is if you need to dump your ammo real fast.. sure so some ppl that is good.

but then you can miss place your mag and that also sucks. but fast for reloading if you have 2 mags

it must be cheaper to make detachable box over clip, just like it is to not put iron sights on.

The reason that I always buy detachable mags is that it is very cold here in Manitoba and the snow is very deep. There is nothing like pushing the button on the hinged floorplate and dumping all your shells through frozen hands into the snow. Geez I hate it when that happens.

I'd way rather have a hinged floorplate than any other system on a hunting rifle.

Unless I took up a hunting style that necessitated loading and unloading often (like in and out of vehicles all day) and then I might prefer a detachable magazine. Although loading/unloading a hinged floorplate is pretty simple, fast and easy.

When I was younger and walked a lot I preferred a 700 ADL stock. It carried the nicest and I was not loading and unloading a lot...

Now I use a 700 with a Kwik-Klip as I am in and out of a vehicle a lot...

:agree: Floorpate for me too! Magazines are for truck hunters.

First rifle was a DM, thought the concept was cool - fast reload, or one mag with 150s another with 180s... Now prefer hinged (or blind) - lips always in perfect position (no issues with fit /position of mag), sleeker stock, and 4+1 (or 3+1), do you really have need/time to quickly reload?

I dont know why Detach. Mags are becoming so popular. If its a convenience issue, how much of an inconvenience is it to push 5 rounds down into a magazine? 1,2,3,4,5, push the 5th down and drop a 6th in the pipe if you really like...painless and you know your cartridges are there. No fiddle fawking with magazines.

As far as I am concerned, all centerfires with detachable magazines can be dumped in the ocean. Much prefer a hinged floorplate, or even a blind mag. Eagleye.

Can't yah do what some of us do with our SKS rifles...ie hold your hat under the floor plate as you open it? :D

Usually detachable box magazines require cartridges to be shorter than magazines with floor plates because the design requires that you put a box inside an existing box. A floorplate magazine cannot be lost, and the cost of replacement detachable box magazines is getting out of hand. Deficiencies relating to magazines that fall out too easily or floorplates that open under recoil dumping all the rounds on the ground are often recited by those who prefer one system to another, but if your rifle has a deficiency it should be addressed. The problem is that many have a hard time spending more on a rifle once they get it home so they might be inclined to live with the deficiency. From my point of view the only detachable box magazine that was ever any good on a bolt gun was the 10 shot magazine found on the Lee Enfield.

I luv floor plates. When I have my rifle with me, I know I have ALL my rifle with me. I remember when I was a kid, searching my Uncles house, looking for his mag the day we were leaving for hunting camp LOL. After that all my rifles were magless, except for my first hunting rifle which was an Enfield.

As for people saying you like mags because of quick reloading....whats the rush??? If your hunting, and you somehow managed to empty your mag, your quarry is long gone.

I have always preferred hinged floorplates because I'v seen too many hunts ruined by lost or forgotten clips. When your 40 miles from nowhere and one of your buddies clips falls out in the woods or he can't find it --- shure takes some of the quality of the day.Omho
Cheers!

Detachable mags are ok, but the floor pate is a classic design; you get an average of 5 rds. Mags are quick to load/unload, but really how many shots do you need to take? My vote is for swing floor plates.

:agree:

I have a Rem 700 DM in .270 and wouldn't have it any other way. I like to have an extra mag full for quick change. I do more target than hunting though.

To those people that can't keep track of their detachable magazines, how do you ever keep track of your license, your knife, your truck keys etc?Are your mitts tied together with a string that runs through your coat sleeves?Losing a detachable mag is the worst excuse that I have ever heard for not wanting one.
