Clip magazine or Hinged floor plate?

I prefer the quick, simple unload of the detachable magazine. I own rifles with both. I am NOT a truck hunter, regardless of what someone like Wookie316 might say. I'm definitely with Stubblejumper on this one; anyone who loses their mag is the kind of person who would forget his ammo. Of course, we hear about these mythical types all the time in the warnings about not buying anything newer or less popular than the .308 Winchester.

I have rifles with both systems. A removable magazine is handy if in and out of truck alot.

BUT, if it is not clciked into place, it falls out and gets lost. That can spoil my day. It can be left behind. I can bring the wrong one.

A fixed internal magazine is the most reliable with less to go wrong.

Hinged floorplate since my memory seems to be getting worse by the hour. Mine are quite secure but if yours has a tendency to release unexpectedly, duct tape will solve that problem.

TBS I do like the detachable box magazine on my LE No.5. Especially after backtracking 20km on a logging road and finding it lying in the sand after I forgot it on my tailgate and drove away.

When we are doing drives, deer hunting, we move locations every couple of hours. For that style of hunting, the magazine rifle is king.
For days when we sit on a stand, the floor plate makes a nice trim rifle, with fewer chances for something to go wrong. Remember that every time you dump the cartridges from the rifle, you also dump any crud that you might have got in there. Not so with a detachable magazine.
Also great at moose camp, where we walk out the door, and immediately are hunting, and we won't unload until days end.

I have both systems, and I really don't have a big issue with either.

If I had to choose though, I'd likely take a magazine rifle, for it's speed to load and unload, and just try to keep it clean, unlost, and undamaged.

Also have both and see no issue with niether, Both are good in there own ways, But yes if i had to choose it would be the mag rifles!!

To those people that can't keep track of their detachable magazines, how do you ever keep track of your license, your knife, your truck keys etc?Are your mitts tied together with a string that runs through your coat sleeves?Losing a detachable mag is the worst excuse that I have ever heard for not wanting one.

:agree: Best answer yet. :D

lost mags

every fall i get a ton of calls, from people who have lost their mags.when i tell them the price of a new one, they ussally say they are going to have another look for theirs. Some cost as much as 225. and some are just impossible to find. Nobody ever calls to say they lost a floorplate.

BUT, if it is not clicked into place, it falls out.

This is the main reason for me disliking them. I've seen too many of my buddies sitting there with the rifle between their legs fumbling with a mag like a monkey ####ing a coconut.

Or you go to push your mag in and start walking and "plunk" mag hits the fawking ground.

That being said all of my current rifles ARE detach. magazine fed .

Yah the same people are probably too busy looking for their lost bolt to find their lost floorplate. :D

Tends to happen to people who use the Enfield Mags as detachable mags...in reality this weakens the spring, and the mag was only meant to detach for cleaning.

My comment was not intended to be taken that literally every mag guy is a truck hunter. I just like to poke fun at those who don't take 10 steps from their vehicle all season. I don't think anyone can deny that the detach mag is however the preferred setup for most truck hunters. In the end does it really matter if your a mag or stack guy? If the rifle shoots and you like it, who cares!

If you're considering purchasing a Remington 700 DM, make sure the detachable magazine inserts easily and locks in properly - every time! I have one in 300 WM and it sometimes does not go in properly and you have to frig with it to get it to lock in on both sides. Not really reliable if you're in a hurry with cold hands. I wrote to Remington re. this and never even received an answer! Poor PR if you ask me. I think their DM could have been better designed and as that rifle is now 15 years old they may have improved it since then.

I've been using detachable mags on my 760/7600s for over 20yrs and haven't lost one yet. EVER!!

On the other hand, this Fudd wouldn't own a bolt gun with a detachable mag, except a Lee Enfield.

And I wouldn't own a 760/7600 or a Lee Enfield.:D

You got that right!
I've seen clips screw up and get lost enough times to know better.

If for whatever reason I spot a nice Bullwinkle while driving to a good area I drop one round in from the top.....I mean...how many rounds could you possibly need?
