The ZF-1, good old Zorg Industries...we need to get them on the case.
I love the Segway equipped troops...be a hell of a way to get around FIBA...till the rubble starts to build up that is. Perfect to move the riot squad around to supress the masses though.
For those guys who seem like their heart is going to EXPLOADE over this take a few breaths, they are studying a concept. It may or may not produce something...I'll agree the concept should have been studied to death by now but it apparently hasn't. It probably boils down to some advances in material science giving someone the idea that they can finish the job. I think that very soon any advanced army is going to look like a platoon of indigenous troops led by a western advisor. The difference is the troops are going to be semi-autonomous robots so if all they get out of this is how to use some new materials then it won't be a total waste.
Finally, those who want to blame this waste of tax dollars on the Scientists and Engineers, you obviously haven't worked with too many. I worked with about 10 D.Eng/M.Eng in the late 90's and you can sum up the Doctors of Engineering with two words, Arrogant and Conservative, if they are working on some Sci-Fi looking weapon it's likely because they know they can sort out the problems. I'd be really surprised if it hasn't come from the industry, OICW, K-11, and now our bench test unit. I have zero contacts in the industry, but it looks like a few people at the top of the food chain really like the concept and it's suitable materials that are holding it back. Those who want to tell stories about the egg heads lost in space...here's a story about them. Look around you, just about every useful thing you have surrounding you was created by the people your claiming to waste your hard earned dollars. They did it by creating a concept, developing the materials, and engineering it into something useful. It wasn't some hillbilly working in his garage...never was, go ahead toss out John Browning...NOT hillbilly, he was likely closer to Einstein or Newton intellectually then us.
Whether by accident or design it keeps popping up. The thing is if they throw enough resources at it, something useful will be produced. We can start with the ammo...how about a 2-300 round magazine that doesn't feel like a dumbbell is strapped to the bottom of the Rifle/MG. That will be the result of caseless ammo or an advance in propellants be they chemical or electric.
In the end it's all moot, robotics and AI will make it so...The Singularity is right around the corner, most of us just don't recognize it.
