i feel lucky that i i can still see, and that i wasnt bleeding . felt like i got hit in the forehead with a hammer. can you say" overload".?

the gun was new, dont thint there were any headspace issues,,,,im on dial up, ive got some more pics to load in a bit.
by the looks of things, its an ammo issue.

wait till you see the bolt. or should i say, whats left of the bolt

Bet the guys at ar15.com would like to know the details about this ... Post it there... It will be beneficial for all ar15 shooters to find out what happened so it can be prevented.

Glad to see you ok.

Well that's one way to dewat a rifle... never seen one that bad before. Looks like it was locked up when it happened to me but you may get some good comments if you post the pics over on AR15.com.

well, im about 99% sure it wasnt an out of battery fireing. the bolt pin dosent have a mark on it, it could be used again it looks like. i thought for sure i was going to find a wreaked bore, like there had been something in it to cause a preasure build, but after i got it apart its as clean as a whistle. no bulges, no nothing. probably could use the bbl again aswell.
i think its simply a overload in the ammo. it was the last round in a 5/ 20 round mag. earlyer i went and sent a few over the crony, and they were in the 3300 FPS mark. the 2 other fellas on the line sure had to stop and look when it happened, was extreamly loud. i was sittin at the bench, and the peice missing in the bottom of the bolt, went THROUGH the corrigated steel bench top
all's i know is im out a rifle, and i have a bad headach
tomorow im going to try to find a contact number for winchester, and send some pics

If the cartridge went off before the rifle was fully in battery, it would not take an overloaded shell to cause the damage seen. I would be talking to Colt.

I have had problems with that same brand of ammo in my 11.5" colt that I had..... problem was a feeding problem that pushed the bullet back into the cartridge, usually it would cause a jam, but if the forward assist was used it would feed the whole mangled mess in.

luck for me I only had one box, ended up throwing half of it out.

Glad you're OK Beater. I suspect both Colt and Winchester will be quite interested in this one to say the least...

I suspect they will both claim it was the other and it would cost you $25,000 in lawyers and lab exams to get $1000 out of one of them for your rifle........
Now, if you were severely or permanently injured it would be worth persueing with a legal claim.

well, i do see that the bolt failed.
But why?....and even if the bolt was the problem, and all things being equal, how the hell would it split the upper reciever like that?
i still figure that it was an overload, plain and simple
