Cool grouse experiance today ...PIC HEAVY

When I was a kid, this old farmer guy had tamed one pretty good. You would pull up to a small bush area, rev your car a couple times, and within a minute it would come trotting out. You could feed him by hand and it was quite an attraction in the area....got super fat lol

Great pics. Amazing how close you can get to them sometimes. What they lack in wariness in some areas they make up for in beauty not to mention good eating. Feel blessed to have such a good number of birds in my area and know if all else fails I'll always have some birds to bring home after a weekend in the bush.

Hehe !! There's a reason the cal them " fool hens" !!

The terminology I used earlier, 'Gum Boot', was one I recall my Dad using. It was what he called the darker mature Spruce Grouse that may have been feeding on evergreen needles. His rule of thumb was that if you saw a 'ditch chicken' on the road and if it looked like a 'gum boot' standing there, that's likely what it would taste like:p. It wasn't necessarily what I found to always be the case but that was Dads take.

I shoot the Spruce Grouse as well, if the snow is not deep they taste much like any other Grouse.
If it is deep and they are feeding on pine needles they taste a bit like pine needles, a nice change of flavour I figure ;)
And mostly dumber than a sack of rocks lol:p

awesome pics.

ive been out south of gp a few times and have only seen 3 grouse. not sure what the numbers are like in the bush though as i was just road hunting/ sitting on cutlines

Depends where you are , this year there are plenty (I also road hunt) but some of the roads are more like quad trails lmao
There is a pipeline south of GP that if you are on it you will notice someone has run over lots of the trees that are closing in on the trail(Hitting them with a tire and flattening them lmao) ...That would be myself in the runner

Great photos, and of my favorite game bird:)!! Thanks for sharing. Here's a few photos I took of Spruce Grouse,;)or 'Gum Boots' as we sometimes refer to them as.

We had just returned for lunch to my cabin following a morning Moose hunt and we found them feeding on berries in the front yard.

Nice photos man ;) I see yours has much more red over the eye than the ones here

Ha-ha Schnubb, maybe he tawt you were his pah?
Great photos.
Here's one of early this year before hunting season.
Dang feather was in the middle of the trail and wouldn't get out
of the way.
He was quite perterrbed as he was court'in sum female feathers.

Seen a few like that one this fall :)
Nice pic man

Around our home my kid and I go frequently on ATV rides. For the last two month every time we ride a certain trail, on our way back out, a grouse would fly above our heads and land about 10 feet in front us. It will circle around and looks all excited! My kid is getting off the ATV and can approach it close to touch.

I shut of the CanAm and it will flush. Funny that! However, since that we call this our "Friendly Grouse Trail".

Ohh btw, really awesome pictures from all of you.

In many ways, grouse are my favourite animal to hunt. It's often the first thing a young hunter shoots and it's still fun, if you're at the age where the annual moose hunt is starting to get to be too much. If you get skunked on a regular hunt, it's nice to at least throw a couple grouse into the truck on the way home and I've found them almost everywhere I've been. Plus, they're just plain fun to stumble on .... Especially if you flush four or five and try to get them all lol.

They are a truely mental bird. Its amazing they have survived so long being so dumb. We had to remove a flower decoration from our big bay window at the back of the house. That damn flower killed many grouse one summer. I bet 10 grouse committed suicide hitting the bay window trying to get at that flower. I was able to eat three of them. I'd just listen for the "thud" then go outside and collect my prize off the ground.

In years of high numbers, they do have a traditional 'silly season' in early fall and supposedly it's nature's way of dispersing the population. But that's about the only time I've personally seen them do truly dumb things. I think hunting pressure is good for their collective IQs.

You don't see ruffies as tame as in the OP tame where I live. What you see is more like a flash and a blur as they disappear.

Some of them are educated now , when they see my truck they are gone instantly lol

Yep , when they lose a few buds...they get smarter lol

Great pics, that would be fun to see. Guy doesn't know how lucky he was.
yep I do :)
Never ever ever dreamed I would get that close, most of the time 20 feet and they are sketching out lol
