Counterfeit Leupold Scopes

hey folks. just wanted to share a couple of things with you guys, related to the "knock offs" and good quality genuine scopes. i have been a member for a couple of years with no interaction till a few months ago. i am looking for a couple of items and wanted opinions and feed back from those of you with more experience. i was taken badly a few years ago on one of the first fake leupolds in my area. as a poor country bumpkin, i always used open or peep sights, which i was pretty good with, till a few years ago when my eyes began getting bad. i purchased a "leupold" 3.5-10 long range tactical IR from a buddy of a buddy, whom i casually knew. it looked good, had an embossed black band stamped on the front , tactical turrets felt firm, nice click when rotated, even had direction arrows on the scope body for windage and elevation the sightron s3 doesn't have. i had never seen one, so took him at his word. it looked good to me. gave him $600 for it, a lot for me at the time. of course soon after it became obvious i was duped, the ir dial came apart inside. he wouldn't take it back or refund my money. don't talk to him anymore. so, now a few years later i am looking for a good scope and am pouring through everything i can find on cgn and the internet. almost settled on a sightron S3 6-24 or 8-32. i'm not too lazy to research it, on the contrary, have been reading everything i can find on scopes in this price range for a few weeks now. that is why for new, inexperienced guys like me, it is nice to see honest, complete, unbiased reviews and opinions on firearms, scopes, etc, by you guys with lots of knowledge and experience to share. it might seem trivial to you, but invaluable to me. these forums, when used as meant to, are a wealth of information we can use to help make what we hope is a good decision for us. a new S3 is about a grand. i'm on a retired medical pension, that's pretty well my whole income for a month. it will be a huge purchase for me, not to mention a spat with the mrs. so. please guys, those of you who take the time to post an honest, in depth review, keep up the good work. it is really helpful to some of us. thanks for listening. Zoot.

I suspect this to be a fake. What do you think. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251563808992&fromMakeTrack=true

On a side note I bought a surveillance video card for a cctv setup. Turns out that geovision card was fake. The first clue was a factory box with no UPC code. I could not load the driver on my pc so called geovision and they asked me to send them a high res pic of the front and back side. Did that and they told me it appears to be counterfeit and suggested I call leo. I filed a (FRAUD ALERT) claim and the seller said ship it back and they would refund all. I told them doing so would put me in violation of Canadian laws regarding fake products and I could not legally export it. I told them I would hand it over to the RCMP for destruction and to refund me now. I got my money back with (FRAUD ALERT) awarding me the case. They did not voluntarily pay up/ A month later I sold it on craigslist with a disclaimer that I believed it to be fake but would refund the cash if need be. Funny enough I got a call from a local security company rep (call display) who bought it and I assume is using it because they have not been back since and that was 4 years ago. Paid 180 for it which (FRAUD ALERT) gave me and sold it for 150 so came out way ahead.

Here is my 5 cent: If you want to buy a real Leupold, you should expect to pay a Leupold leveled price. Lots of "looks like real stuff" cheap scope are for airsoft only, never intend for real cailber. Anybody expecting 70,80,90,100 bucks of stuff can have close performance as 1500-2000 bucks scope, they are making fool of themselves.

I have a mark 4 , called Leopold they asked simple questions I told them it has red and green illumination Missy laughed and said sorry it's fake hahah, I said for the price I paid I'm happy for a cheap scope

If it has a red and green ya know off the bat! lol

I didn't pay a cheap price for this one but I have every confidence the seller is a stand up guy.

Wow I never knew this was a thing... until I got scammed.

Purchased a Leopold DeltaPoint Pro off ####### for a few hundred. Was used with a few scratches so I thought it was a fair price, but not cheap enough for me to even consider it as a counterfeit product. Here's a picture of what I saw:

In fairness to me, I did a lot of research on the sight by googling "Leopold DeltaPoint pro" and going to their official product website as well as checking reviews both Canadian and American and visiting retailer websites. Nothing mentioned counterfiet or fake products at all.

Met up with the guy today. Nothing stood out; white male in his 60s, well spoken, drives a truck and friendly. Had his wife in the car. He had the sight ready to test. Red dot came on by shaking it. Said he gave me a new battery. What a swell guy right?

Had a few scratches and a tiny mark on the glass that looked like it could be cleaned off. He mentioned he wanted to sell it because he sold his tavor so the sight was just sitting. It had all the correct markings. No spelling mistakes.

Thinking I got a good deal at half price off I was happy. Took it home and noticed the battery cover doesn't magnetically hold the battery. The clicks for the adjustment aren't present. Finally, the 2 page manual he provided had Chinese writing, which I found was strange for a US made product.

So I got scammed for a few hundred. Will email Leupold but I'm certain it's a fake. Not sure if the old man who sold it to me knew. He claims he got it from a gun show two years ago.

Pictures forthcoming. Please let me know what you think.

So, I'm in the process of buying a Leupold Mark AR mod 1 3-9 x40 Scope for $330, in excellent condition, includes the Leupold mount, from a CGN'er with a 291 feedback score. But my spidey sense's are tingling...what if it's fake?!

A little research later and turns out I can use the scope serial number to find out from Leupold if it's legit, or not, simply calling them.

Now I'm just waiting on the seller for the serial number, before I send EMT payment.

Hopefully he's a genuine and decent seller, certainly such a high feedback number would suggest so, but....some people don't mind passing along a counterfeit that they were duped on while pretending not to know themselves.

I'll post an update if this turns out to be shady, thanks for this thread.

Beware!!!! So when I asked the seller on CGN equipment exchange for the Leupold Scope serial number he first ignored me, then messaged me to declare he'd sold it to someone else since I was being difficult.

This scam artist refused to provide the serial number before being paid, funny eh?

Saved myself $350, and I'll gladly learn from this and pay double that to support my local gun shop who deserve the money for all they do to provide service and product.

Protect yourself from thieves, verify Leupold scopes with serial number identification.

Maybe you were just being difficult? I also provided details to a buyer and sold the scope while he "verified" in the past.
If you have handled real leupold products and then a counterfeit, it becomes apparent in the details.

Seeing as the last Leupold I bought was a VX3 and not the VX3i a quick question.

Do the VX3i's come with a neoprene scope cover or have they gone to plastic lens caps?

Saw a scope in the EE but the lens caps are making me wonder?

We have been made aware of several optics just like this one were sold at the Toronto Sportsman's show this year (we do not know the vendor). The most troubling aspect of this is these new wave fake's are priced at (or near) the same retail as a real Leupold. The days of an obvious fake appear to be over.

Be careful what you buy from unknown sellers.
