coyote bullets

I'm going to try hunting yotes this year for the first time and have some bullet questions. I'm shooting a .223 . I have already developed a sweet load for 70gr Bereger VLD for target shooting and I'm in the prosess of loading some hornady 60gr soft points. Which bullet should I try using that would cause the least damage to the pelt. Or whats a good bullet for a .223 1-9 twist on yotes?

Thanks

I use the Hdy 60 sp with Varget powder in my 1:8 twist 223.Its plenty accurate and gets the job done on coyotes. There will be an exit, but its not a big deal. GJ

I would assume it didn't expand, as well, if the coyote travelled 300 yd after a hit through the chest.

All I use any longer are 40 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips started out at 3900 fps from my 223 Ackley...........................coyotes don't move five feet. :)

Ted

Hi Ted,

That's probably a fair assumption, but I've seen some impressive death runs after good hits with good bullets, and unless I open an animal up to inspect the vitals, a small entry and a small exit don't always tell the whole story.

I have had exceptionally good luck out of my 223 with James Calhoon 52gr DBHP. bullets.Hit hard and alot of the time no exit wound. I am also trying out some 52gr HP from a canadian manufacturer and so far they are proving as good as the Calhoons.

Real good with result with the hornady SPSX. Dropped coyotes in their tracks. Try a few bullets and see what shoots best with your gun. Lots of good bullet choice are in this thread. Good luck

I've loaded up 50 gr VMax bullets on both my .223 and .22-250 that will be seeing some 'yote' action this January. I like the lighter bullets that open up like a grenade, especially if you miss the critters, then there is no collateral damage. ;)

It sounds like anything between 40 and 250 grs, in calibres between .223 and .338, in any bullet type, work quite well on coyotes.

Perhaps bullet type and weight are not the critical factor!

I realize that you can kill a coyote with just about anything. I have never shot one and I have never used a VLD for hunting. They are really accurate in my gun. But they are a target bullet and I was wondering If they would do the job on a coyote or if I should look at loading something else.

Maybe I should have explaned it better for you

Thank you everyone else for the replies :)

Try the vld's out. I think they should work. Worst case scenario they act like an FMJ. I am going to try out the .224 80 GR VLD’s and 77 GR SMK’s sometime this winter and will cut him open to check out the wound cavity and report the results.

i got a few boxes of cheap 55gr. winchester fmjs when i bought my .223. The fmjs rolled 'em over ok and not a lot of pelt damage. I think when im through with the fmjs, ill load some 36 gr. varmint grenades. Good? bad?

can you even hunt with FMJ out west? youd definitely want to check into your hunting regulations for your province.

most 5.56x45mm FMJ is actually quite frangible -- i wonder if there would be a significant damage reduction over softpoints at ~100yd ranges.
has anyone tried them at ~100-150yds on a coyote? what was the damage like?

Saskatchewan Hunters' and Trappers' Guide 2009:
"it is a violation to: .... Hunt big game with full metal-jacketed, hardpoint, non-expanding bullets." The hunting of coyotes, beavers (in some rural municipalities), rabbits, raccoons, and skunks is not regulated by our ministry of environment. Except the sale of pelts from these animals, which we require a fur license for. Also, the ministry strongly encourages us to use the animals we take, but they are considered "varmint". So just if anyone is wondering.

I am using the 60 gr Ballistic tip in my .22-250 and they leave softball size hole in the hide regardless of the distance!!! I have used the 60 Vmax, practically the same results!!

A few buddies are using the 40, 50 , and 55 gr Sierra Blitzkings and they are having great results in the hide salvage department. just push them fast and they blow up inside!!! Going to give them a try when I run out of Ballistic Tips!!

Not in agreement with the FMJ's they have usually past through the 'yote, not cool when shooting around the populated rural areas, too much possibilty of collateral damage!!!

just my .02 cents

I shoot 10 plus coyots a year with my sako .223 with a cheap 55gr ballistic tip from ultramax. I get a 1'' group at 200 yrds.

True, i am only using FMJs because they came with the rifle. I also carry federal blue box 55 gr. soft points to shoot in denser areas, they seem to shoot the same to 200 yards. All the yotes i've shot have been up against a hill or surrounded by such in the south country. Haven't hit one with the soft points yet, im sure it'll be messy. At least all we need are the feet!
