My attempt at a Mk18 Mod 0 clone:

What I can identify missing still is the M16A1 grip, standard AR trigger guard (actually, I have lots of these, but I may stay with the Magpul one), sling plate, scope and scope mount, KAC flash hider, authentic LMT rear sight, and of course the M16 lower, lo! Probably missing a bunch of other stuff as well, but I'll have to figure that out later.

I may have to shop around for another KAC RIS, or at least just the upper portion of the handguard. The one I have here seems to be holding, very firmly might I add, but who knows how long it will last.

Near as I can tell, I have the right stock. LMT Gen 1, without the QD sling attachment, I picked this up years ago for about $100 CAD but good luck finding one now. The last I checked on Ebay, these are running damn near $300 USD.

The LMT trademark has been faked before apparently so this alone is no guarantee of authenticity.

Supposedly a tell-tale for authenticity is the red o rings in the caps, but I don't see how this could not be easily be faked as well. Apparently the best way to spot a real one from a fake is the weight and guage of the material used....the reall one will be made thicker and will weigh slightly more than the airsoft clone version.

I'm not sure if this the correct model Surefire light, but it looks "close enough" for me. Even left the bulb unmodified (most folks swap out the incandescent bulb for an LED unit). I bought it used and was marked with a paint pen. I didn't bother cleaning it off.

Calling this build done for now, and will add the right parts as they come along. Well, at least the busted up KAC hand guard seems to fit and hasn't given me any indication that it would snap right off, lol!

Thanks! Still missing a bunch of parts, but I guess I'll collect those over time when I stumble on them.

When I first got the idea in my of possibly building a Mk18 Mod 0 a few years ago, the KAC rail and the LMT stock were easy to source and a dime a dozen. Even the LMT rear sight could be found on Ebay for about $50 USD. I figured these were parts no one wanted anymore, there was plenty of supply and they would probably be around if I ever wanted to build one.

When the time finally came to actually getting it together, the market was totally different and these parts are fairly difficult, if not impossible to source for the prices I saw a few years ago.

Then I started shopping around for other parts and they are just about as hard to find, lol! I guess supply is really drying up for a lot of these parts.

The rail was definitely an authentic KAC rail, but it had also see better days.

So, I had two bottoms, and one top for the KAC RIS, but the top was the one that was sort of pooched. I may need to shop around for a new upper section.
 
Looking at this thread, it seems like some of the parts for these builds are not that easy to find.

I have an as new KAC RAS that I took off a NIB Colt 6920 SOCOM, and a couple of new DD Mk18 RIS II in FDE that I bought a while ago, but didn't use.

Would it be worthwhile to put them on the EE, and what would they be worth?

There's a DD Mk18 RIS II in FDE that's been sitting in EE since the beginning of August going for about $225

And there's a dude selling a KAC M4 RAS complete with rail covers for $350, though he's been bumping his post since January, lol!

Both built on 10.5" Noveske N4 barrels made by FN. I figured I would build two MK18 uppers if sopmod would go with either DD RIS2 or KAC URX after the US SOPMOD RIS 2 trial. The second turns out more like a C8 CQB clone for the OPP. I just have to put in an inverted crush washer ha

Damn....now I sort of want to do a Mod 1 build......my wife hates this forum because of all the great ideas I get from it, lol!
 
Maybe I haven't been into these Mk18 clones as long as others here, so I'd like to ask the pros here, the CQD sling plate and Wilcox Aimpoint mount, are they really a pain in the #### to get a hold of?

Seems like the more I tell myself I just want to get "close enough" for a clone build, the more my OCD is getting to me, lol!
 
So I got off my lazy butt and snapped a few pics of my newly acquired LMT sights thanks to my buddy Chris :)

I think I proclaimed that this build was done, and "close enough" was good enough for me in terms of this clone build....but my OCD is getting the better of me and I've since re-opened my wishlist for this rifle.

From a distance and a quick glance, it might not be that noticeable, but to clone builders of the Mk18 Mod 0, it's glaringly obvious that the clone is missing the LMT logo.

My clone on the left and the real deal on the right. Notice the roll pin hole on the clone is large (the hole on the other side is smaller) and actually a bit crooked. It's as if they drilled the hole crooked and had to hog it out this side so the pin would go in straight.

You can see machine marks on the clone on the left but the LMT unit is smooth

The rear of the clone is flatter and actually does not sit flush with my Colt upper, but the back of the LMT unit is cut to shape and lines up perfectly with my upper.

On the real LMT, material is milled out either for strength or weight savings, but the clone is a solid hunk of metal.

The clamp on the real deal on the left is definitely beefier and you can see the clone on the right is the typically thin guage style clamp you see on airsoft mounts.

You can see all sorts of blemishes under the finish of the clone on the bottom, but the real LMT on top is smooth
 
I threw on a Colt A2 grip and swapped out the Magpul one. Still debating with myself on how far I want to take this clone project because I really like the Magpul trigger guard, but it's not correct. Yes, the OCD is strong in me, lol!

So what else is missing to make this a better build (never going to be perfect)? What I have identified is the following:

- M16A1 grip
- CQD rear sling mount (*ucking unobtainium it seems)
- Wilcox Industries Comp M mount (available at Brownell's for $129 USD)
- Aimpoint Comp M2 (EE?)
- PRI Gas Buster big latch charging handle(available at Brownell's for $89 USD)
- KAC M4Qd flash hider (used to be available from One Shot Tactical for $120 CAD but they are currently sold out)
- Surefire 962 instead of the 951 that I have on there

Some other notes on what is not Mk18 Mod 0 correct is the selector switch (not supposed to be ambi), the trigger guard should be a standard Colt instead of the Magpul unit I have on mine, and I may also need a new RIS. Mine may have that "battleworn" look because it actually has been in a dirty part of the world, but it might actually be a little too distressed to the point where it's not 100% serviceable. Time will tell on this piece, but if I come across another RIS for a decent price, I may jump on it.

So far, the parts that I'm actually seeking out are the CQD sling plate, the A1 grip and perhaps a Wilcox mount. I'm wondering if I could get away with the Aimpoint PRO...it is a 2moa versus the 4moa of the Comp M2
 
This will probably be the last update for a while since I don't foresee myself shelling out $129 USD to replace a scope mount that works just fine, or $89 USD for the PRI Gas Buster charging handle to replace the Badger Ordinance tac latch on there now.

A few goodies did arrive in the mail though. A used LMT SOPMOD stock that's been in service for probably a bit too long, and an older M16A1 grip.

I'm not sure if the "C" mark inside the handle is an indication of Colt or not, but seems logical.

Compared to my "less distressed" LMT stock. Now you're probably wondering why the hell would I buy such a beat up stock? Well, since I started researching Mk18 Mod 0s, I've come to discover that some parts are a right pain in the #### to acquire. For instance, the KAC RAS will run damn near $200-300 USD complete for BNIB, $150 for used and rail only (no covers or grip). I haven't seen a KAC RIS system for ages.

Anyway, back to the LMT SOPMOD stock, the correct model for MK18 Mod 0 is the LMT gen 1, which does not have the QD socket for a sling swivel. I figured one with (gen 2) would be more desirable but apparently not. Another company, B5 systems was contracted to make the identical stock, but apparenly the trademark LMT on the stock will drive the value up. I already had an LMT gen 1 (bought it for what I thought was expensive a few years ago ($120 CAD) I yanked from my Colt Canada IUR, but I really liked running the LMT on the IUR so I wanted a second one. The only problem was, I wasn't ready to shell out $300 USD for a BNIB one. I haven't seen many used ones and though a B5 would do the job just fine, those too had gone up in price, almost double what they were last year.

I found this one off an army trucker who used it on his rifle when he was overseas. He's probably thinking he robbed me for the price I paid on this beat up old stock (25 bids on this thing before I finally took it) but I'm thinking I robbed him for what I ended up paying. Considering the inflated value on these things, I still ended up paying less than I did my first one, so I think I did okay.

I know that some folks are going for that "distressed look" by paining or cerakoting their rifles, then "weathering" them by scraping or scuffing up the finish, but this is not one of those. This one was once painted, but there are some serious wear marks in the plastic itself, not to mention some gouges and worn rubber buttpad that looks like it could have only happened over time.

Though my rail and covers have also seen better days, they are still more black than anything else so the stock as it is today doesn't really match. It's not a huge deal, I may just leave it, but if it starts to bug me, I think my buddy suggested I could remove the paint with.....brake cleaner or something?
