CQBR / Mk18 Mod1 Clone thread - Show us your clones!

I hear you. Just shelled for a MK12 douglas barrel from HiCal sales and it is sitting at the exporters. 590 CDN to get it there. Still cheaper than a Noveske SS match (800 CDN up here) or a Lilja SPR 16" Recce barrel (900 CDN)
I did find a MK12 FFRAS from a vet who got it from a US quartermaster at an Afghan FOB. Paid well below cost on that so I won that one.
I probably wouldn't mind paying that kind of coin for a match barrel, especially if it's ready to drop in like that (no chambering, turning down, threading etc), but what sort of got me was the kind of coin that an older design handguard (cheese graters essentially) would still be able to demand.

Your lucked out out getting a Mk12 FFRAS, wow! I've got a similar story, but not as cool as being on an actual deployment though.

I was on an ex with the Arizona National Guard down in the states a few years ago and asked one of their sergeants if they had any spare rails I could borrow and try on my C7. The next day, he came back with a brand new in package set, albiet with P&S markings, but still issued and completely new. He told me I could have them and didn't even ask for anything in return.

I was pretty stoked about getting it onto my C7 but, when I got back to our shack, one of the MCpls (I was still a cornflake at this time) told me there was no fukking way I was going to modify my C7 with unissued kit.

Here's my MK18 Mod0 with some paint. It took a long time to find the proper AF forge code Colt upper but when I got it the finish was silver! I just couldn't bring myself to paint the RIS Rail though.

My M4 has a little more paint and use on it, just have to muster up the courage to do the lower. I don't think I'll ever be able to paint any of my MK12's, no matter how many times I watch Lone Survivor, lol!

Still need that to make it complete on a Mk12 or 18.

Jesus. That much? What model is that specifically?

Yes because there is a abundance of Class III IR laser in Canada. It's the last model produce, 2A. It was a LE demo model. No run time on it. It was just used at a trade show. A piece of crap beat up Peq15 just sold for $3000 in the EE.

Finally had a chance to put them up.

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.

Nice pics, thanks for posting!

Any KAC RIS experts here? There's a bit of a debate over on ARF about that little tab forward of the hand guard. One guy is arguing that on the RIS, the tab sits on top of the hand guard cap another guy said it's supposed to be tucked in under the cap. Some are saying in both the RIS and the RAS, they're both supposed to be tucked in.

Ok, so when I first started my Mk18 build, I had a RIS (older model, odd number markings, one retaining pin seen from the side profile). I mounted it with the tab sticking out:

Then I got my hands on a RAS (newer model, even number markings, two retaining pins seen from the side profile). I also mounted it with the tab sticking out:

When I showed ARF updated pics of my RIS with the tab tucked in, one guy said it was right, the other said it was wrong.

Some army guys chimed in and said they'd seen it both ways, said the inconsistencies was due to the incompetence of some of their armorers.

Found this image online and it does look like the tab is sticking out on the RIS:

So, is the tab supposed to be sticking out of the handguard cap on the RIS?

RIS tab always sits on top of the front cap. Torquing the front screw then tightens the top rail to the cap.
On the the RAS tab goes under the cap (inside) as it has a spring tension which pushes up.

I have the Navy MK18 manual. I can't remember the link but if you want the pdf pm me.

Awesome, thanks for the clarification. If it says it in the manual, I'll go with that.

Thanks again!

If I remember right I originally had the tab on top of the handguard cap for my RIS and it never seemed as tight as the RAS on my M4. When I took my MK18 apart to paint it I tried it with the tab under the handguard cap and it locked up nice and solid with no wiggle so I went with that because it worked better.

Nice score on the RIS BTW.

Got it, thanks! I just briefly skipped through a few pages and noticed something odd:

Reference pages 22-24

1-5. LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR COMPONENTS.

Figure 1-2. 5.56MM MK 18 MOD 0 Carbine Major Components.

b. Backup Iron Sight (2). Backup iron sight is adjustable for
both windage and elevation.

Is that a misprint or is that just me? It looks like it's referring to the backup iron sight labeled (2) in the image. (2) however appears to be pointing at the aimpont and there is no back up iron sight in the picture?
