CQBR / Mk18 Mod1 Clone thread - Show us your clones!

A few corrections:

MK18 Mod 0
- Colt Lower
- Colt Upper
- Colt 10.3 inch barrel (earliest where cut down Colt M4 barrels
- Mk12 Gas Block (Daniel Defense or Badger Ordnance - opinions vary. Kevin B from KAC indicates its a Badger) (negative stock Front Sight Gas Block)
- KAC RIS (later M4 RAS)
- KAC M4-QD Flash Suppressor
- LMT Rear Sight or KAC 300m Flip Up Rear Sight
- LMT Sopmod stock
- CQD Rear sling mount
- CQD forward sling mount

MK18 Mod 1 (Same as above but with newer rail)
- Colt Lower
- Colt Upper (or DD)
- Colt 10.3 inch barrel (or DD)
- Mk12 Gas Block (Daniel Defense or Badger Ordnance - opinions vary. Kevin B from KAC indicates its a Badger -- Kevin B note, Badge on the Mk12, earlier Mk18 Mod1 where using BO, then chnaged to DD when DD started assembling the uppers in house --- for unit assembled uppers, it may be a number of options)
- Daniel Defense Mk18 RIS II Rail
- PRI Gas Buster Charging Handle (Gas deflecting charging handle)
- KAC M4-QD Flash Suppressor
- KAC Front Flipup sight in Taupe (KAC speak for Flat Dark Earth)
- Matech or KAC Flip Up Rear Sight (appears again to be all over the map but the Matech fits under the Elcan for sure) KevinB note, MATECH is US ARMY issue, USASOC elements may opt for "free" rear sight as no sight comes with the upper from Crane)
- LMT Sopmod stock
- CQD Rear sling mount
- CQD forward sling mount
- Tango Down Vertical Foregrip BGV-ITI in Tan
- SU-230/PVS 1-4X Dayscope (aka Elcan Spectre Dr 1-4)
- SU-123 ECOS-E (EOTECH 553)
- Some have the MRD mounted on top of the SU-230 (Miniature Red Dot aka Docter Sight)
- SU-233/PVS Visible Bright Light III (aka Insight M3X Tan)
- LA-5/PEQ Integrated Small Arms Illuminator (aka Laser Devices DBAL)
- and about 10,000 more variations...

SOPMOD current suite is a interesting aspect...

I have noticed the 2 variants between building a SEAL MK18, and a Special Forces CQBR. Kevin Maurers book "Gentlemen Bastards" is a look into Green Beret operations in Afghanistan. Great pics of the MK18 CQBR.
Noting that when it comes to operators, they can add their preferences in either service, the Green Beret MK18's were fairly consistent in this book.

Older Colt stocks (Gen 1?)
Grippod Foregrip
matech rear sight or none
KAC QD forwrd sling mount
SU230/PVS or Eotech 553 Tan
NT4
Hogue grip
M3X
DD tan rail covers

I like the Elcan but need to get used to shooting with my nose closer to the charging handle for the right eye relief. The Elcan is mounted here... way to far back. Still need to pick up BUIS.

Now the next item to experiment with is the "fake" suppressor... one because it's part of the Mk18/Sopmod kit and two it will drive our favourite Ryerson lady nuts (Barrel shroud! Shoulder thingy!) lol!

I've ordered a Spikes CAR1 to play with but also found a much nicer one from MFI out of the USA...but of course they don't ship to Canada. It's a much nicer clone of the KAC QD unit though!

The Spikes is cheap and I hope I managed to get one without that stupid spider on it (sand paper and engine paint will solve that):

Can even cover over 16" barrels to make it look like a silenced 14.5":

The real "KAC" one (without the white lettering):

Hey Kevin, any reason why KAC can't make us a short run of non-functional QD suppressors? (Just take all the "guts" out). That way all of us Canadians and people in the states that don't want to wait 6-8 months for their silencer paperwork can built up a proper Block II clone. I'm pretty sure they would sell (hell I'd buy two right now) as enough people are buying these fake ones as it is.

The problem with all the clone "barrel shrouds" is that they require you to remove your flash hider and screw it on. A KAC made one woudl quick attach/detach to the KAC Flash hider.

I'm in for two if you can tell me who to "sell" the idea to at KAC ;)

Then I want a cut for the hundreds you'd sell on AR15.com

Cheers

My Insight M3X arrived as well! Thanks Jason! Shameless plug in the photos, love that sticker... so want to put that on my car while driving in Toronto!

What I didn't like when I removed the cover in the Tango Down grip was there wasnt a built in grove on the Insight remote switch so you'd have to put the velcro in there and never be able to stick the old over back on easily if you wanted to not have the light or rock out to the double switch once in a while.

So I came up with the idea of a removable "plate" for the velcro!

---

Could not find anything suitable at first but then I found some old "duct sheet metal", I simply cut a piece twice as long as the grove with tin snips and folded it over to make a nice strong and thick enough plate, then squeezed it perfectly flat in the vice to get a nice crisp fold and voila! Perfect fit (exactly 0.40 as the grove).

Now WITH the plate installed, put the velcro down (so you leave enough room for the edges to slide in) and get it centered.

Here is how it looks removed:

Then just slap that switch on and you're ready to go!

Works perfect and now I can take the switch off or on by simply removing the end cap and sliding it out.

Cheers
Tim

Forgot to mention, the IR filter that comes with the M3X is partially in the range of "low end" Nightvision, though it does show as a smaller spot light, not a full bright area light. Tested with a Yukon NV. Can't find exact wavelength online right now however.

This is unlike the Surefire IR filters which require NV that can see a little higher in the spectrum and won't work at all with Yukon NV.

Here's a video of me shooting one of my buddy's Mk.18 Mod1 clones complete with can and fun switch. Built on a Magpul Chinadoll lower.

edit: pardon me, that one wasn't on the Chinadoll lower, but it was one of the more rare Magpul lowers.

Unfortunately I don't have any full shots aside from the video, but I'll see if I can find any of the owner's photos.

Love this thread!!!! Thanks to who ever started this!!! Keep the pics conning guys!!

(BTW: on the AR15.com forum I noticed a lot of the Mk18's with the KAC QDSSNT4; does anyone know if they were real ones or if those are just airsoft cans, trying to build a clone and that would really complete my build up nicely. Anyone have any suggestions?)
