Crazy prices

Walmart and Cdn Tire don't care. Not their primary SKU driving sales. Any site sponsor here sells for way lower.
It wasn't always that way. When I got into guns 10 years ago Canadian Tire was the cheapest place to get 303brit and Walmart was the cheapest place to get 270/308/30-06 - at least the cheapest places around where I lived.

I'm happy to support real gun stores, but it was nice to be able to pop into Walmart and grab a box or two for the range rather than drive 30+ minutes each way to Wanstalls. Now Walmart near me doesn't even sell ammo and Wanstalls is gone... =(

LOL
Who buys ammo at big box stores anymore, Walmart, Canadian tire, Cabalas/ Bass Pro are all at least 40-70% markup over retail. There are sponsor retailers that have that exact same ammo at 32.99-42$ depending on how you look at, most of them offer free shipping over a certain amount. People just need to learn to shop around.

Prices are getting so bad that I bought 10 boxes of 308 now, just in case I buy a rifle chambered in that caliber later.

Agreed, but there are a lot of gun owners for whom the big box stores are the only place they think they can get ammo, because they don't know any better.

I know three of them who for decades exclusively bought their guns and ammo at the CT, Bass Pro / Cabelas, not realizing there are smaller dedicated gun stores within 30 minutes of them. All three are not on CGN or even have accounts on GP or TP. They were all older gentlemen, incidentally. Once they found out there were other smaller stores that sold ammo significantly cheaper, it was as if the proverbial "ding" went off in their brains. "I've been ripped off for years!" they exclaim incredulously, as they started loading up ammo at these stores like they just won The Price is Right.

No offense but if someone cant do basic research to shop around then that's on them. Anybody that has access to this forum knows about the vast dealer network in Canada that can ship. and if they are voluntarily choosing to pay CT or Bass Pro a 60% markup then I have no sympathy for them losing money.

You know that, and I know that, but as I indicated, these folks I know are not on CGN or any other gun site. I think one of them doesn't even have internet access. Two of them weren't even aware of the 2020 OIC. I suspect there are more than a few out there who have "always bought from there" and probably habitually think that that's the easiest and only option only because it is what is familiar to them. And these big box stores will continue to sell ammo at these highway robbery prices, because there are people, somewhere, who are willing to pay exorbitant prices for the same.

thegazelle has a point. I'm often meeting someone at the range that 'just bought these for $100' at BP and could have bought them for $30 online. And some of them are '30-somethings', not just fudds. ( "more dollars then sense" )
However, the shipping charges f-you unless you have $300 to spend - some people don't. I try to tell them to 'hook up with a buddy' to get a $300 minimum - it doesn't take long if you're used to paying $100/box for "Match .308". . . or a few bricks of 22LR. I stock up whenever I see a good sale of something I use.

Cabelas is the closest store to me. I buy a lot of my ammo from there. But we're talking 22lr, 9mm, 12ga, and 7.62x39, all of which goes on sale for good prices. I don't buy centrefire rifle, I reload that.

I bought some Eley club at my local CT a few months back too, was $10/box which is cheaper than most sponsors even if you buy a brick. A few months before that I cleared them out of blazer 9mm at $17/box.

I guess my point is there's still deals to be had, even if regular prices are bananas.

I am doing the same thing, but perhaps even more bizarre. I don't own a 25 ACP at the moment and we all know they are prohibited and under current rules I could never acquire one. But when the boxes of ammo popped up for $9/BOX they went into my cart and got purchased. I figure I can barter with them unless that azzwhole in Ottawa bans private sales of ammo.

How many of you remember the dedicated CTC gun section in the sports area? There was always a knowledgeable staffer available when needed, ie. a few weeks before the seasons were about to open. Often these people could tell you about upcoming sales if you befriended them. Coffee and donuts from Tims saved me a FORTUNE. I managed to be first in line for the sale items and cleaned out what I wanted. My CTC had the same staff for a couple of decades.

2 x a year Walmart went nuts clearing out stock. I would take all the 40g Winchester Varmint .223 loads @$7.99/box of 50. I walked out with 10 boxes and the shelf was stocked later that week with the same stuff @$18.99 OR more. This wasn't that long ago. It was after I realized I better stash CF rounds to go with my .22 stash. Making friends was tougher as the turnover at Walmart is pretty high. Then one day all the ammo was gone and Walmart stop being a source.

My best friend, God rest his soul, managed to accumulate >40,000 rounds of all types, he had expensive stuff like quantities of 300 WM and even lots of 458 WM. If CTC sold it he managed to snag it when there were clearance sales.

A while back i was digging through some boxes and found a few boxes of .270 that i totally forgot i had and i don't ever remember having planned to get a .270 either, so it must have been a good deal at the time.
Then i felt like i now needed to get a .270 to take advantage of this forgotten ammo i stumbled upon

Reload and save, I've got 2 threads on my reloading. One is for 6.5x55 which is pretty standard day in day out stuff, but I'm trying for match grade ammo. The other is for 338 LM, which I'm also trying to get the best consistency out of 2 types of bullets. One is a hunting type using Interlocks, the other is for longer range accuracy Lapua Scenar 1km+.
The Swede is about a buck and a half, and I'm getting MOA at 500m. The .338 I've got dialed in the hunting mode at just over 3$ per, the long range stuff is running 3.50ish per. Both calibers I'm saving big due to reloading, the swede not as much, but the 338 I'm saving over 6$ per. That definitely adds up

the 7mm rem mag ammo my rifle likes has headed north of 100 a box...... in fact before Trudeau , 50 BMG was cheaper than what that 7mm rem mag ammo is selling for. I poked around...... price is the same or similar pretty much everywhere I looked.
Our pitiful dollar is part of the problem but I also think somewhere in the ammo supply to Canada, someone is making out like a bandit

I forgot to mention, I'm part of a group that does batch deals. The spend ###$ and free shipping , last group buy ended up at 800+$. My portion included VV powder, with our group sale I saved hazmat and cost of shipping 10 lb of .338 bullets

Although I don't need any ammo I always check out the stock wherever I go, mostly out of curiosity. This is in Walmart today.
3 bucks a pop for Federal blue box was a shock. Anyone else seeing crazy prices?
Lol wait till you see prices in Quebec. 1 we don't have ammo.2- it's more expensive here than any.other province-3 even "by owner" some sellers think that selling at cost is a deal!

May I ask? Where are you guys that have ammo at Walmart? We don't even have pellet guns in Quebec🙄

Agreed. Support your local family owned gun shop. They have my business any day over big box retailers.

Greater Vancouver. But a LOT of the local Walmarts have stopped selling ammo in the last 10 years. I'm not even sure if Chilliwack is selling it these days...
Wow, we never..even in the remote areas, I will admit that even canadian tire don't sell .22 cal rifles in the city that I'm aware. Some will have ammo but you'd have to go about an hour away from mtl to find a rifle.
We had enough of a scandal when stores with pharmacies couldn't sell cigarettes!!

Most Canadian Tires here sell guns. Not all, its up to the store owner IIRC, but most.
