Customized P-17's

In a nutshell, A local gunsmith (passed on) made it in the 70's using two Parker Hale magazines cut into two and welded together into one, the floor metal is from ??? and modified and the stock and reciever modified as well. It worked great until I bust it into toothpicks in an ATV gun boot about 3-4 years ago hunting with my dad (who also is no longer with us). But I finally came up with some "happy money" to fix it and I believe I have the right man on the job to fix it. I took my first moose with it, with my dad. I have a lot of happy memories wrapped up in that gun:)
I'll post pic's when it comes home.

I did a P-17 once upon a time, I wonder in whose hands it is now? I converted to #### on opening, think I bought the "sear?" from Herters. Milled off the ears to Mauser style back bridge, straightened the bolt handle & bottom metal. Replaced the ejector mechanizm from one of a FN Supreme Mauser. Left the safety alone and of course restocked with an after market stock - Herters again I believe. This was some 45 years ago but I remember all the work - needed the money so it had to go. --- John303.

Let's see if I can get some of these pics linked and showing

I was going to ask mistic to chime in on this because I remember how fond
he was of the P17's, building all those long range rifles, but he beat me to it,
nice work:wave:

Another one... Larval stage, not too interesting.

Jerry you will likely be hearing from me in the New Year about a barrel for this.

It looks like the ugly duckling story, but in iron & wood.

Wow!! Who would have thought that my old thread would go for so long!! ! Awsome!!
Anyway, here's a pic of my old girl with a Bushy 3-9x Trophy I put on her after I had Bill Leeper d&t 1 hole for proper spacing for bases. I wanted to hunt with it this past hunting season and I did, but did not see any legal mulie bucks to hammer with it. Sure piqued the interest of a few dudes I ran into, though. Next year.
This gun is so accurate , its downright spooky. This with Winchester Super-X 165 gr PSP'S.

Anyone ever convert their P14/M17 to .416 Rigby? Is it possible?

Would be an interesting route to take with a custom build...or the .300 H&H is something I've always wanted...

My favorite P14 is a 404 Jeffery built by my brother for my 60th b/day.
He has built P14s/M17s in several different chamberings including 416 Rigby, 460 Weatherby, 505 Gibbs, 510 Wells etc., just to name a few.
He built one in 257 Weatherby that was far more accurate than my 257 Vanguard, so I sold my Vanguard and am still trying to get my hands on his Enfield.....

Pardon my ignorance since I don't know a lot about p17 rifles. But why are so many customs built on a WWI action? Is it a good action with advantages over a modern action? After looking at all these I'm tempted to find a cheap bubba'd p17 myself and do something neat.

The original mauser style design is very strong and pretty foolproof. They were made very well to a standard you would pay a whole lot more for this day and age!!
I have a box of 9 P14 receivers waiting for that rainy day!

Here is the old gal, with bolt removed for storage.

Question though about stocks. My cut down military stock is not ideal for use with a scope and I was thinking of restocking the gun.
SOme guns shown here have custom stocks, what are my options for off the shelf synthetic or wood?

P17 .300 h+h

Here's the latest pics of my .300 H+H P17. Swapped scope around again, have done this several times. Havent taken any game with it since having it built a couple years ago so havent bonded with it yet. Yet to do much load development and the "big-bore" bug is biting. Sorely tempted to re-barrel to .404 or one of the .416's. If I can put 3 into an inch at 100 yards I'll leave it as a .300 H+H, if not...?
Cheers

If you do a bit of research, you will find even more customs built off Mauser 98's.

Some of these are the most expensive rifles in the world - as in 5 digits.

These controlled feed actions have been valued for a lot of big game and dangerous game rifles of which they work superbly.

Mill off the rough edges, put them in a nice stock and they are very attractive rifles that can take alot of use and abuse in the field.

They will not be the first choice for accuracy and tactical users but they can hold their own in the field when a good quality barrel is mounted.

Actually, it is ironic that these actions aren't used more often as they certainly have a proven record for working in the muck.

If you can find them, a sporterized BSA P17 or 14 makes for a very nice base to built off. They are very strong actions and can be customized to your hearts delight.
