Got the barrel back for my M14 shorty project.

Had the barrel cut down to 18.75" and threaded for a Smith Direct Connection Vortex FH.

Had the barrel screwed back into the reciever, indexed and rifle rebuilt in 2 hours.:D

Dropped in a "slightly" used TRW bolt that fit perfectly without any lapping.Barely any bolt play at all.

Also drilled out my rear sight aperture a wee bit so now I see the entire ring of the Navy sight. This makes picking up the front sight really quick.Since this is a shorty, this will be a 200 meter gun at most.

The parts list is as follows:
-Norinco reciever with 18.75" Norc barrel assembly
-Gas cylinder shimmed
-S.E.I. Direct Connection Vortex FH
-Rooster33 gaslock front sight
-Rooster33 NM op rod spring guide
-Rooster33 oversized bolt release
-USGI recoil spring
-USGI TRW bolt
-Norinco op rod
-Norinco trigger group
-Damage Inc. MARPAT USGI Fiberglass stock set
-Fore end accessory rail
-Dummy selector kit (just need a USGI op rod to install the connector link).

Now with my "fake"( Airsoft) Smith can:

The modified rear aperture:

For those that are curious, cutting the barrel and having it threaded cost me $40.00.

The entire project before taxes would be around $1300.00 retail. This includes the purchase of the rifle ( but lucky me I have a source for bargains!!!:D).

You could do the same project yourself a little cheaper buy using a plain jane stock and modifed AR FH for around $1000.00

I would like to know, PM me please, who cut the barrel down to 18.75" and threaded it for 40$.
Much thanx.

It was a friend of a friend (retired gunsmith) who did the work for me.He only does local work for certain people he knows and doesn't take in work from the public. Sorry.

I love that "SOCOM" look.. I've seen more than a few lately. The M305 looks pretty hot shortened like that. Quick question. The barrel length has to be over 18.5"... without the flash hider?

Barrel only (NOT including FH) has to be no shorter then 18.5".

I had mine cut to 18.75" just to be on the safe side.;)

Well all ya need is the SOCOM Vltor stock. Too bad they won't sell ya the cluster rail.

Hah, not for me.

This was built as a "K.I.S.S." gun (Keep It Simple Stupid.);)

Simple USGI stock, iron sights, no optics.

Nice, light and handy. This will be my new hunting gun as well.:D

Indeed. I just may have to build one of these. :D I'd just start off with the barrel chop and stock. About have much do those stocks(USGI fiberglass) run for? (unfancy painted or one color)

Skullboy,

What is the diameter of the rear aperature?

Trit

I'll have to measure it.

I just drilled/filed it out until I could see the whole front ghost ring.

I just wish there was a metric dove tail gas lock so I could mount one of the XS Tritium front sights (like I just installed on my SAGE.:D:cool:).
