Dangerous game scopes

Thanks all. I miss these good threads... everyone seems to just want to argue on here these days.
Always a pleasure to see what this one has got up to when I awaken ( graveyards are my shift...always... ).
I just finished Ruark's book on Africa and he was scared of Buffalo. But his thoughts on the charge pretty much mirrored Dogleg's.
I had a bigger rifle in a 375 WM...but it was a No. 1 T with a mercury tube...I empathize with the guy packing the MG in milsurp pictures... man it was heavy! No real recoil to be scared of though...weight just sucked it up. It turned into a Grad Dress a couple of years ago...
Down to a 9.3 x 57 is the only larger bore rifle left... thought of reaming it to a 9.3 x 62. Still be too small ( by regulations anyhow) for a lot of that Africa stuff.
I'd imagine that a good old 375 H & H will be the next medium bore that I acquire.
This thread will likely help decide the glass.
Thanks again all.

If you want the power of the 375 and the handiness of a lighter rifle, AND good iron sights, be sure to take a look at the Wby Vangaurd 375 H&H.

Mine is very accurate, and while a bit of a mittfull at the bench, is quite manageable from your shoulder. The comb keeps the stock sliding away from your face in recoil, rather than into it.

Why not just get a 375, the you are at the legal minimum everywhere. Again minimum. I wasn't aware of much hunting going on in Kenya right now, haven't seen any reports . I believe south africa the 375 is the minimum, as well as Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania. The latter three is where I am looking at for a.cape buff hunt. It would be a shame to set up a rifle specifically for a cape buff hunt to be disappointed that the country you want to go to won't allow it.

I would love to have a 9.3x62,. Just too many rifles and not enough time.

For a plains game scope I used a 3-12. The 12x higher power was nice I suppose , but 6x would have been fine . I found myself fiddling with the power rather than worrying about the shot too much. It didn't cost me any animals , but it could have. I found much less time to take the shot in the Kalahari than here. I would also see more animals in a day there than I would in a year here. Africa is truly a magical place.

i said was for kenya as of course no more hunting since min 70s ...

south africa it will depend on the provinces. no caliber limitation in namibia this is energy the rating there. for zambia and tanzania yes .375 is the mini but i doubt a ph will turn you down because of a 9.3x62 ... if you are to demonstrate the real world differences between a .375 and a .366 like the 9.3x62 please let me know.

Real world difference or not, the law is the law. I was just trying to offer some help to the original poster. From the little experience I have had in africa, I would choose to obey the law. Follow what your professional hunter recommends for sure.

A link to Namibia professional hunters association website. The Caprivi would be a great place for a Buffalo hunt.

I don't get into internet pissing contests.

Good day to you

Good day to you

not a problem i lived and hunted in africa and neither interested in a pissing contest.

edit: you added a link that is not the law ...

this is the law:
https://www.met.gov.na/files/files/NatureConservationOrdinance 4 Of 1975.pdf

you will see there is no indication of caliber contrary to the napha ...

only buffalo hunters are requested to the 5400j at the muzzle no indication of caliber. no indication for hippo, rhino, lion or elephant,

enjoy your day as well.

Already talked with my PH and saw forum posts on africa hunters, there is 1 province in the east of SA where .375 is the minimum, everywhere else is legal!
I just enjoy classic calibers and nice rifles, and this one kind of spoke to me, so we'll be getting it set up properly with a premium bullet and some load development!

Some dangerous game rifles and scopes for your viewing pleasure :)

Have a zeiss 3-9 on my cz 416 Rigby , can't find any pics handy. All good scopes, suited for a few different situations. I am happy with all of them.

Honestly, I saw your AHR semi custom on the buy and sell, and if I had that kind of money... it is a very, very pretty piece. Great collection! I normally shoot long range, polymer, and high speed low drag so a chance to harken back to the Good Old Days!

I lucked into a beautiful Belgium Browning FN safari in 375 H&H , it is a beauty of a rifle, I haven't had a chance to get optics on it yet, but is nice to shoot with irons, beautiful action. I have the sa.e rifle in 338, that was my father's . If you get a chance at one of the old browning's they are a great rifle!

I was fortunate to get the AHR from our site sponsor Prophet River. Such a wonderful group there. I have been treated so well by them .

They are decent human beings from what I've seen, I never have enough to buy what I want from them! The trials and tribulations of being poor.

Never been a fan for sling swivels on rifle barrels. Why would that be better than have it on the stock? Have you carried a Schnabel forestock rifle with swivels on tbe barrel?
