Deer hunting with dogs

The dogs that I have hunted with on deer stayed close as I used them for their nose, not for their teeth....the dogs that I have used on pigs were used to pull the animals down and to lug them....different game, different rules.
But the same applies with my dogs....if they are off the porch they are feral.

Who said anything about teeth? Dogs are used here for their bark, not their bite. For the most part, by the time the dogs get to my watch, I'm already gutting the deer.;) They rarely even see a live deer, as the deer are usually 2-300 yds ahead of them, loping along.

At my camp, without a dog to get things stirred up, you don't see anything, cause most of the bush you can't see 40yds in front of you. Our dogs don't run down an animal and kill it, they just stir up the crowd a bit. Sometimes it works great, other times the deer is long gone and the dogs still running in cirlces.

:) After reading 6 pages of a thread I started, I must admit that I was surprised that the only one that really gave me some info on this was wrong way(thanks wrong way), I was entertained on some of the posts that went back and forth however I appologize for creating a thread that hit a nerve with some members, I didnt know it was a touchy subject with some people, that was not my intention.

George,

you did not hit a nerve, we are just entertaining ourselves....I was playing at billy goat gruff and stomping across the big wide bridge and some of the others were playing along.
You can put it down to boredom....and having heard most of the questions before.
James.

Dogs are always good for a hook.

You sound like a TROLL !! Your initial spew was not in jest!

& yes my 25lb beagle regularly runs down & kills 235lb bucks!
Just takes him a couple hrs to drag it back to camp, by which time he has of course eaten over half of it!

And that is how it should be over here.

No, I am not going to let this be.......over here dogs are used in two ways on deer, first use is as a nose dog by one or two hunters.
Second type of use is in teams of dogs accompanied by a team or teams of characters, the first use is legitimate, the second is in my opinion not.
My reasoning is thus, the first use is primarily by a hunter or hunters and the quarry is hunted in a way that ultimately pits a single hunter against the animal, giving the quarry a better than reasonable chance of survival.

The second use pits a team of dogs and at least one team of doggers to run the animal down.

I now shoot every dog that I find unaccompanied as a matter of course.

Yes you with a .300WM certainly gives the quarry a reasonable chance

Senior, the largest calibre firearm that I own and hunt with is my 1949 Brno model 21 in 7x57 which has a 4x Pecar scope on it, and I use that whilst standing on my own two feet......so you must be thinking of some other argumentative prick who owns a .300 Winny.

Oh...and I prefer to hunt alone, with or without a dog.

Hunted for a good number of years with hounds, including 2 different pairs of Beagles, "Mork" & "Ike" and "Nick" and "Ab".

Some great chases & quite a few deer.

Nothin' like hound music along the ridge tops !
