Deer Season 2020 Thread

Conditions this weekend in region 3 of BC were perfect. I was able to harvest a fat whitetail doe. Shot in the chest around 100 yards shooting down hill, bullet deflected and came out the mid spine/ back strap. Shot with my Zastava 98 Mauser in 8x57. 196gr Norma reloads at 2550 fps. Never took another step. Glad to fill the freezer and am looking forward to the rut!

Beauty doe and neat calibre/rifle !

Last year, I left my pop-up blind in a public land spot for the season, someone stole it.

This year, I hunted the same spot, but didn't leave the pop-up there ... built a massive brush pile, and hid the pop-up behind it.

Until last night. I had favourable winds this morning, so I went in after dark and got everything set up for a first light hunt this morning...

Got there, someone had already stolen my blind by first light!

Got the camera, which he walked right by ... no pic of his face, but he'd only beaten me to the blind by 45 minutes.

Getting pretty bad. Gonna need to start carrying a gun while bow-hunting for self-protection.

I leave a note on mine, says "if you are standing at my blind I've taken your picture with 3 cameras. Make sure to find and steal those too." probably does nothing but who knows

Wont be out until at least the weekend, weather is showing to be a warm week so the activity wont be great anyways. Hoping next week will have more movement on the cams once it cools back down. Good luck everyone!

Had a pretty exciting deer hunt tonight on opening day here for shotgun hunt.

I'm sitting on the northeast corner of a 100 acre property over looking a bunch of apple trees which had a lot of sign. 60km/h winds today i thought they would be down there out of the wind.

My buddy is hunting down the road in a hardwood bush and the wind was too much for him so he came to where I was and was going to sit on the other end of the property til dark. He pulls in the laneway and there is 2 bucks chasing a doe with 2 fawns around the field 250 yards from the laneway. He stops the truck and calls me and tells me whats going on. I ended up running as far west as I could then hiked south to the far end to be downwind of them. By this time I have spooked 2 other deer and I didn't even look to see what they were. Get down to the south end about 100 yards from where the 2 bucks are last seen. My buddy stayed in the truck because he didn't want to spook them anymore.

I'm creeping up and I can see a big body deer in the hardwoods. I can see antlers about 75 yards away I get the gun up and squeezed the trigger on his shoulder. Watched him stumble then drop about 2 steps later and doesn't get up. A doe appears about 20 yards in front of me and as I glanced at her I caught antlers behind her going away. Big buck high tailing it straight away.

Turns out I shot the smaller of the two bucks. The other was a big 10 point as my buddy got a good look at them both. Still made for a great end to a brutal windy cold day.

I spent Sunday evening hunting with my 9 year old son. We sat for about two hours before catching movement through the trees. A young 6 point buck slowly made his way into the clearing and began to feed. The young mans patience was sorely tested as we waited for the perfect shot. After about ten minutes which I’m sure felt like an hour the deer turned and stood broadside. With dads whispered advice “just behind his shoulder, breathe and squeeze son” his rifle cracked. The buck dropped instantly and was still. Many hugs followed and a few tears of pride and joy. What followed were many photos and phone calls to family and friends as the young man told and retold his story to everyone. This was a hunt I will remember for the rest of my life.

Good stories, keep em coming.
My first trip out was a dud. The snow was about a foot deep and as an amputee (below knee) it was hard trekking.
Checking out one of our White Tails spots we got on to a decent herd of Elk but never got close enough to take a shot.

Yesterday, I woke up at 1:30am, then 2:30am, then 3:30am... started getting ready at 4:00am and made my way over to the 100ac block of public land I’m hunting this year. Because I have to walk in with my tree stand, back pack, gun etc I usually try to start my trek at 5:30am the latest... setup a few 2D decoys (2 does and a buck) and got into my tree by 5:30am overlooking a small clearing between two wood lots... me being on the north side... 6:30am made two bleets and a few grunts... made another set of grunts around 6:45am... by 6:50, I saw some movement and to my amazement I saw 8 deer coming straight at me from the southern wood lot across the clearing. They crossed about 20 meters downwind of the decoys... all does... I took one of the larger does...50-60 meter shot with my 870, rifles barrel and federal sabot...

My first deer down... the excitement still hasn’t settled...

Well, I would have liked to shoot a doe and a buck, but my plans got sent awry this year.
No matter, our freezer is in good shape. Pic below. Dave

Sigh. Midway through Week 2 of gun season here, something needs to die in the next week or so. Got a small 8 at one stand that looks like a likely candidate, but it hurts, because I have three much nicer deer on camera ... but I am a working dad and that means no time.

Tagged out this morning at 6:45 am - got to my ground blind at 6:30 am at 6:40 am did 1 grunt call. Actually thought I missed because the buck just trotted away - slowed down - wobbled and then fell over. Pretty much like Meatloaf collapsing on stage in Alberta. WMU 88 seldom disappoints

Wish it was easy to post picks directly on CGN
