Deer Season 2020 Thread

It will need a different approach in the future for sure. My boss hunted close to there years ago with a hanger, but the spot I'm in is far better and only has scrub. There is literally nowhere to hide, unfortunately, without bringing in a blind or building one.

Often just sitting still at the base of a tree with the wind in your favour is all you need. Feel for you, you have a whole additional set of challenges than I did hunting private land all my years.

Maybe build something out of natural materials, then there's nothing to steal.

update #2
went to my blind (WMU88) and waited set my alarm to buzz me at 6:44 pm .... seen a coyote in the field mousing - as I was heading out seen a group of four (okay 8 eyes) about 100 yards in front of me - darn coyotes - going to bring my coyote caller tomorrow - no deer to be seen

I can't get away with that. I have to sit 15-20 yards away from the deer here. Gun hunting, that's no problem, I've shot many deer from blinds that close or even closer--poke a gun barrel out the window, bang, done. I can only bowhunt in this spot, and it's very hard to hide on the ground from a deer at 15 yards, and get him with a bow, because you've got a lot of moving around going on, even with a crossbow. And of course, here in the east coast, we have to wear hunter's orange ....

That's what I did. It's on a shore, so I grabbed all the washed-up trash and driftwood the deer step over every day, piled it up with some cedar and made a brush blind.

It's a weird spot. On an east wind, there is literally no way for the deer to scent you, unless they swim around the blind, which they don't. So, it's deadly effective on east winds. But east winds bring rain or wet snow here in November, so any time I hunt here, I'm almost guaranteed bad weather, and it's really nice to have the roof of a popup overhead.

I'll get it figured out. I may just put a wood stand in there and be done with it. Pile a literal mountain of brush over it, so if someone wants to trash it, they've got to spend an hour pulling all the brush off first.

Went out for some deer this past weekend, northeast of Kamloops. Didn't see any bucks, but got 10 feet away from a pair of Lynx and get some nice pictures with my phone.

Not gonna argue, had 2 does and a fawn under 20 yards around me while my crossbow and I sat completely exposed under an apple tree last weekend. The does eventually caught some scent and questioned my shape, came in, stomped, snorted, then continued grazing. Whole thing went on for like 20 minutes until they walked away. Scoped the big doe a couple times. Wind was in my favour and I looked like the base of that tree. The buck I know is around never showed up.

After the shot he ran about 20 yards and stopped for about 15 seconds, thought he was going to go down right there. Then he went and ran full speed into a tree and bust it off.

Shot placement couldn't have been better. It never ceases to amaze me how each whitetail behave differently after being shot. Congratulations!

Sure. I know it works if you can camouflage yourself. Around here, we have to wear an orange hat and vest. And more importantly, this spot has no big trees--it's all spindly stuff because there's no amount of soil underneath, mostly rock.

So brought my dad out on the weekend to get the camp set up before gun season starts up nov 2. Discussing that since the only trailcam pics have been of a few small 4 pointers, my dad is wanting to pass on them if they show up in hopes of having them get bigger for next year. We both still have some meat left from the previous deer but an out of province tag is an expensive thing to have in your pocket while letting a deer walk on by :(

Oh and coach zed, if you want to lug out a tripod stand those are pretty awesome when there is not suitable tree for a tree stand.

Nobody uses those around here, because we don't have bean field shooting like the midwest. But I'd love one for the marshes!

Thats what we use ours for, it sets up nice on the small raised spots that stay dry throughout the season. Getting it there is a pain though they snag on everything. But seems like your main issue is with the thief.

Hey Fellas

its my first year white tail hunting and I got the bug, cant stop watching videos and reading literature on it and spending money, long story short the wife ain't happy.

I'm hunting at a local spot in Halton Region and I have called in the same 8 point buck 3 days in a row. I'm pretty much hunting an oak flat across from a farmers field, first night i was in my tree stand and he walks out about 60 yards in front of me and started making scrapes and huffing and puffing he wasn't happy then took off, I was just using a grunt tube and even snort wheezed at him to try to lure him back when he was walking away in the brush (I'm trying to figure out what works :)) that was at 5:50 pm but I didn't note the wind. Second night i took to a old ground made up of logs etc... that was about 30 yards closer to where I saw him the night before. He came out late and made the same pass from left to right in front of me at 6:30pm with a ENE wind. I tried a couple grunts he stopped and stared at me kept moving then I tried to bleat from a bleat can and he just turned around and walks away. The third night I set up closer to where he has exited into some think bush the previous nights and sit up against a huge oak , I lit one of those tinks incense sticks and laid it about 15 yards in front of me . At 6:09 with a northern wind he somehow shoes up to the left of me, doesn't notice me, this is the first time I've gotten a good look at him and he is majestic big and beautiful. he slowly walks sniffing and walks right up to the blind I hunted the night before smells a mock scrape that I made and continues to J hook out in front of me getting closer to the incense and down wind of me. now he's coming into range and I'm getting might excited , he starts sniffing the ground looks right up which seems like he's looking right at me as I'm looking through my cross bow scope at him... turns around raises the white tail and does 2 leaps and disappears.

I'm washing my clothing with hunters detergent, taking a shower with hunters soap, keeping my clothing in a tote in my car, wearing rubber boats, spraying my self down with scent killer and all my gear before I go in.

all and all its been extremely exciting and a quality hunt. i don't think I would like it or appreciate it as much if i shot him with a rifle or shotgun as i easily could. this is challenging and intriguing. I took yesterday off and don't think i will go back out till Friday as this hunt has consumed me and i need a break for my own sanity and my family's hahhaa.

any input or words of encouragement would be much appreciated. I have also got the draw for " any deer" shot gun at another neighboring WMU which i have set up a stand at and will try to get a doe to fill the freezer because i heard they are better eating but i think i got buck fever.

Welcome enjoy the rush am going out tonight after work going to bring my coyote caller perhaps take one of the five out of the gene pool. Have my buck tag just in case he comes into the great shot zone

Conditions this weekend in region 3 of BC were perfect. I was able to harvest a fat whitetail doe. Shot in the chest around 100 yards shooting down hill, bullet deflected and came out the mid spine/ back strap. Shot with my Zastava 98 Mauser in 8x57. 196gr Norma reloads at 2550 fps. Never took another step. Glad to fill the freezer and am looking forward to the rut!
