Dear Valued Customers,

I want to wish you everyone a happy new year! I am very excited about 2017 and I hope you are too. Our January announcement is two days late due to Jan 1st being a holiday and landing on a weekend. For each of these announcements we meet with all of our departments to get true assessments of where things are, in order to provide the most accurate and up to date information as possible. We have several updates for you:

1. MDR performance: Information and videos will be publicly released January 17, 2017.

2. MDR Media: Production MDR’s will be at Shot Show and we will also be hosting a private “MDR live fire” writers event during shot show. Any interested writers or media can RSVP with Dustin or Jeff in our marketing department by calling our office.

3. Production Schedule:

a. Delivery Schedule: On January 10th we will be posting individual customer delivery dates on our website, which they can access by logging into their order. We are also contacting dealers directly to inform them of their delivery schedules.

b. Current Production Status: Do to some delays in receiving production parts we will be combining Jan, Feb, and March’s planned shipments into one shipment to be delivered in March. We still expect to be at full production by June 2017. If parts show up earlier than expected, then there is still a chance for some MDR’s to go out in February.

c. Caliber Availability: Only 7.62 MDR’s will be shipping through June 2017. The 5.56 rifles won’t start shipping until July. It is possible for customers who have 5.56 rifles on order to change them to 7.62 rifles by calling our sales office and making the change by phone. Changing your 5.56 order to 7.62 will save your place in line and get you your MDR sooner.

The reason the 7.62 cartridge is being released first is because it is the largest cartridge in the MDR platform so the bulk of our time has been spent on 7.62 testing to ensure the MDR is a true 7.62 rifle not an up scaled 5.56 rifle.

The 5.56 rifle lagged behind the 7.62 because the 5.56 is still in testing and because a handful of 5.56 parts use different tooling than the 7.62 and the tooling is still pending. The .300 Blackout conversion kits are expected to start shipping by August 2017. This again is due to the tooling variances.

3. Price Increase: The engineering and refinement that went into the forward ejection mechanism and other features of the MDR are nothing less than fantastic; it is super reliable, accurate, and durable. Unfortunately, more features and more innovation just costs more to produce than we initially expected which has forced us to increase the price on the MDR.

As of January 4, 2017 the new pricing is:

d. MDR 7.62 is $2,525

e. MDR 5.56 is $2,275

f. Conversion kit prices will not increase

All pre-orders are locked in at the old pricing, we will allow customers to order MDR’s at the old pricing up to January 10, 2017.

I’m excited that we are locking in delivery dates for each customer who has been waiting so patiently for their MDR, it is unfortunate that parts delays has pushed the earliest pre-orders back by 4 to 8 weeks.

We hoped to have the 5.56 MDR’s ready at the same time as the 7.62’s but time and manpower constraints didn’t allow it. We are still very excited with the MDR and it’s performance and we can’t wait to get them into every-ones hands. I really appreciate everyones support and excitement, we are on the home stretch and the wait will be.

Sincerely

Nicholas Young
CEO Desert Tech

Ouch.

Not that the RCMP is likely to greenlight these any time soon anyway, but even if they were available in Canada tomorrow I don't know if I'd still want one given the price will probably be at least $4000 CAD.

I don't think this thing is ready for prime time yet. If they cannot let people play with this thing at the SHOT Media at the range demo day, this means they did not have the confidence ahead of time to book a space with a finished product ready for the vigorous abuse of being shot by hundreds of people. If they truly believed they can beat the Jan deadline, they would have booked the range space at the media day well ahead of time. Private event means it is last minute and if things go wrong, everyone will keep it quiet. It is most likely a prototype with hand made parts, not a production sample.

This whole thing, since the beginning, indicates too much rush and optimism about how fast they can bring something to the market, probably to appease investors. I won't be surprised if 5.56 won't show up til 2018 and the 7.62 won't be ready until late fall.

i have said that years ago when this was first announced, the final delivery time is almost the same as what I have predicted.

So by the time you convert the dollar over and add the import fees and then the non restricted tax and dealer markup these are going to end up being around $4000 Canadian.
I was told by one of the guys at DT that they would be filling orders in the US first then hopefully after around a year when they get caught up they would start on the longer version that we want to see. So we probably won't see a non restricted version here for at least two years plus the wait for the firearms lab to classify it which pushes it out to 2020 or 2021 for delivery of non restricted rifles.
I see absolutely no reason to spend that much money on a restricted model since a good portion of the cost is the caliber kit which leaves you stuck with an expensive barrel nobody will want after the non restricted barrel conversions become available, and since once your rifle is classified as non restricted you can't legally swap back in the restricted barrel (even at the range) without changing the status of the rifle the restricted parts are useless unless you want to deal with the firearms center all the time changing the status back and forth.
I want one but I'm definitely not getting sucked into one of the stupid pre-orders that is sure to lead the way. When dealers have them in hand I'll decide if I still want one. Not putting money down on something that is probably at least 3 years away.

I love my DTA SRS but this rifle is more of a toy and would be for fun shooting so it's a little harder to justify spending the money.

No reason to get excited yet boys and girls, it's still a long way away from us.

+1. Magpul Masada all over again. Funny how quickly do people forget.

A pictorial explanation of the MDR marketing strategy...

Desert tech makes excellent rifles. I've faith in them releasing their rifle when it's ready. If that means some delays so be it. Just make sure it works out of the gate.

It seems that they are desperate for new funds :D

I've been waiting a while for this to come out but this price point is insane, even offensive, Off to find another NR .308 I guess.

compared to the stupid price for a garbage Keltec RFB I think the price on this is more appropriate. Still very much over priced and I wouldn't be surprised to see a near $5000 CDN price tag.

A high quality semi 7.62x51, say an LRB M-14 or a heavily reworked Norinco, will be expensive also, although you aren't necessarily bound to spending another small fortune on an optic as you would be with the MDR, assuming you don't have an appropriate one already.

I'll be patiently waiting for this one as well. I do hope they get all the bugs worked out, any time a "totally brand new rifle" comes to market it takes a while to get it worked out!

For that kind of money you can get a used mint Tavor in 5.56 with extras and a mint used XCR keymod in 7.62 and have money left in your pocket.

Yeah, a below average bullpup and a poorly made nose heavy pig called an XCR. I would pass on both but then again they are both available unlike the MDR.

I disagree the new gen keymod versions of the XCR are by no means as nose heavy as the old ones and I'm not aware of a better non res bullpup than the Tavor/95?

Its only rival is the type 97. If the tavors are the worse option when that is the competition I would be severely dissappointed.

As for the xcr... it's hit or miss gun when it comes to qc, and is a fairly hefty gun.

The X95 will keep me busy till the MDR 223/556 joins its brother from another mother... ;)
