Desert Tech MDR Pre-sale

Any chance desert tech could make one 18.6 barreled version just writing can start the frt process. Chances are by the time the rcmp get done with it they might be ready to go with the Canadian version.

They initially stated that they will do a 18.6inch version that would both meet our non restricted version and australias 30inch minimum length. It was announced last year or the year before when they first announced that project.

Will see a .308 Tavor before this is ever approved for sale in Canada

So the presale really does no good for a Canadian as even if we bought one we could not bring it into Canada? 8(

I appreciate beauty from afar but .... I think the RCMP should be a dollar threshold on reviewing guns. For example, if the semi auto is over $4000 that should trigger an RCMP auto classification of restricted based on it being collectible. I'm guessing there are way less expensive illegal guns?

I have to disagree with this...
All that will do is make guns REALLY expensive.
And put a lot of unnecessary heat on affordable ones.

It also raises the issue of various vendors selling the same gun just under or just over the magic limit...
Is the $3995 one Restricted, while the $4001 is not?
How is a cop able to tell the difference?

How about the RCMP Tech lab has exactly 15 minutes, by the clock, to make it FA.
If they cannot, then it is GTG.
Then they see if it fits in a box to gauge overall length.

If it does not fit, it is NON-R

The whole process should take about 15 minutes and 5 seconds...

This brings up an interesting argument. If the RCMP lab with above average experience and equipment can not easily modify a firearm in "x" amount of time (call it 30 days), and that firearm is beyond a certain length. Then the rifle should be automatically deemed non-restricted as not being easily modified.

Should be a simple ammendment to a firearms act.

Sorry I'm way off topic.... perhaps we need a SHOT show, whose going thread! I have requests for attendees.

Why 30 days?
Bolt actions have been converted to full auto fire.

15 minutes will sort out the "easy to convert" from the "technically possible" to convert.

I'm going to SHOT again! Perhaps we will meet.

Pretty slick design... It's a bullpup junkies dream...

I'll bet Tootall already has a pic of one up as his screensaver...

Bring a restricted in, get it classified and then go get a non restricted barrel made. Easy enough to add an extra line to the existing frt to show one barrel length as restricted and one as non restricted.

The action not being capable of being made full auto is what takes time at the lab. Not measuring the barrel length.

There really should be a reasonable time limit. It's ridiculous that certain guns sit in limbo for years but I guess it's as reasonable as banning certain guns due to their name...

Semi auto rifles designed after full auto versions sit in limbo.

AR15 variants, pistols, manual actions and singles do not. For the most part.

All thanks to the firearms act and it's mess and simultaneous lack of definitions. The act in general.

The modern hunter like the AR-15 is a modular design with a removable upper and a lower. Selling restricted uppers becomes an issue as the question of "whats stopping them from putting a Short barrel upper on a registered NR lower?" Why muddy the waters when the ATRS has a unique niche. Basically an AR-15 that is Non restricted with a huge NR price point as well. A $4k ATRS restricted Modern Hunter or Varmint will be competing directly against the highest priced AR-15's...and loose, spectacularly.

Its a massive cash cow for ATRS and they have no intention of bringing their guns anywhere near "restricted" name tag.

With that being said, i predict 2019 for this beauty of a bullpup to be NR in Canada.

Is that why ATRS refuses to build a restricted version of the MH or the MV?
The way the RCMP lab has been trying to reclass things you don't want any association with a restricted version at all. Just because they can simply make a sub entry doesn't mean they will and just because we got lucky enough to do NR conversions with the ACR doesn't mean they'll let you do it with a different rifle.
Who's going to spend this much money on a restricted rifle like this anyway? We may not be as lucky as we were with the ACR either. The ACR pretty much uses an AR barrel with a slightly smaller gas port making aftermarket conversion barrels easy, the MDR may use a proprietary barrel extension so we won't be able to do NR conversions until they get around to making them at the factory.
Disagree all you want but sometimes a little patience pays off big in the end and rushing something to the table will screw you in the long run once they already have it in their head that it's restricted.

I haven't seen those in a few years....IIRC, they were only around $1000 but you were only able to fire around 200 rounds through them before turning them into the RCMP...

I think that is a shotgun actually, and is currently available as non restricted.
