DIY dragunov clones (VZ58L/CZ858)

I didn't mean any disrespect, your work shows a great deal of craftsmanship and the end result is very appealing. But it IS just body work, it doesn't make the rifle any 'deadlier'

hey , none taken. it was never intended to change the original rifle to what its not , i do not have that capability nor do i have the know how .

it was a project that allowed someone like me with basic skill and limited equipment to change the appearance of a CZ858 to something im very fond of but not allowed to own or shoot and then change back to its orginal form .

did i get the feeling when i shot it that i was shooting a real dragunov ? i actually did to a point when i had my face on the cheek rest and looking thru the scope (i like to think that how it feels) but the feeling soon vanished after i pulled the trigger.:( but regardless im still happy with my work .:)

BTW, kasat did an excellent dragunov clone using a SVT40 , that required far more work then im willing to spend .

i know it sound sick paying $8000 for a real russian SVD NDM-86 (not chinese NDM-86).

but heres is the last real russian dragunov SVD sold for $9000 on gunbroker.com

http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=98630105

so that $450 item on GB is advertised as "Real Russian SVD flash suppressor with front sight".

to convert a PSL to SVD stock , i quite often used a hand rasp to shape and dremel for around the corners and then a palm sander for the flat areas.

oooops , i forgot to mention the round bar in the SVD stock and no one has asked me before you .... well , its a CZ858 cleaning rod , i used the brush end as a drill bit, i file some "V" to the threaded end and attached it to my drill press , took awhile but it worked , it was long enuff to reach all the way near the bottom , do not penetrate , just 1/4" from the bottom of the stock .

then i used the upper part of the cleaning rod , the piece with a grove near the top , i cut to size and pushed it in till the head is just below the top then i put a screw from the back that reached the grove and held it in place .... good luck

so what parts are you missing?

On making stocks (as I was asked):

Tools and products:

Wood, two halves
Wood glue
Dremel bits
http://www.naturalhorsetrim.com/Cheryls_dremel_bits.jpg
(4th from the left is the one I used)
Dremel sanding bits
Palm sander
Bandsaw (outside cut)
Scroll saw for inside cut (could use coping saw)
Drill for stock attachment
Spade bit for boring large holes (for where the stock bolt end is larger)
Regular bits at a bit larger than the diameter of the bolt body.
Stain, if needed
Polyurethane and brush.

More details to follow. ;)
