Dlask 8.5" Rem 870

so whats the currenty classification for these guys? are they still non rest. with the PG on it? or if it stays in the truck does it have to wear the full stock? thanks

Just got off the phone with the Canadian Firearms Centre's technical guru's.

(Note-these would be the same guys the police would call if you are pulled over with a PG shotgun).

12.5" barrel with PG only is considered a restricted firearm. As the receiver is the only part that is registered - once classified restricted - it is always restricted - even if you put a longer barrel or standard stock back on.

I've got enough going on with my life without complicating matters with respect to costly legal defense expenditures.

PG only on my 12.5" Grizzly will never happen.

1) did he/she site the portion of the act that makes the PG shotgun restricted?

2) Nonsense, restricteds are converted to non all the time. M1 carbines, Beretta storms, etc. Just more propaganda from the CFC. I cannot believe people call them for their opinion, they want to ban guns.

I don't know what kind of guru you talked to but it's either a non-rest shotgun or a prohib one. It doesn't turn into "restricted".

The only problem I have with that statement is that you can put longer barrels on restricted's and make them non-restricted. The Beretta CX4 Storm (Sold in Canada as a Restricted) comes to mind, a longer barrel can put it into the non-restricted class.

I also own a Glock 27 which is normally a prohibited firearm, but it has a longer barrel making it Restricted.

In regards to the shotguns though... I'm just happy we can have super short barrels.
I want to avoid the headache as it is easier to explain that it just needs to have an OAL of >26" :)
If there is this much explaining withing the Nutz community... imagine trying to explain to a cop (who thinks Hollow-Points are illegal) that your pistol gripped 12" 870 is non-restricted ;)

I'm just saying.

I have no vested interest one way or another what the ruling was. My question was simple. What happens when I put a PG on a 12.5" shotgun.

I am well aware that restricted are converted all the time. It doesn't make sense to me how one is determined by barrel length/AOL and another isn't. Don't agree with their logic but when ideology is a factor - logic usually is never a consideration.

I didn't call them for their opinion, I called them for their interpretation. If the issue is so complicated that it will need a judge to determine what is/ is not allowed -- so be it - I just don't want to be the test case (even if I may be 100% "legally" right).

Besides, opinions is what I get when I pose the same question on an internet forum :)

They say it is a handgun, thus restricted, because they cannot use the short barrel laws, because it is a factory gun that does not fold, telescope or other (i.e. use a button to shorten)

CanAm, but if it's a 870 shotgun receiver they can't just reclassify it as a handgun because they don't like the pistol grip on it. They either say that the pistol grip is a modification that shortens it to "prohib" status or it's a short barrel non-restricted shotgun.

Well, I guess technically they can probably do what they want. FWIW I'm not aware of a long firearm that was change to a "handgun" status because of it's OAL.

Anyone chrono'd anything out of one of these yet...?

I had posted chrono results with a few slug loads quite a while back (spring 07) but it appears to have been nuked, I will try to repost it tomorrow. IIRC velocities ranged around 1100-1250 fps depending on the load.

Ardent, it took a while but I found the data from last June.
Chrono at 10 feet, Dlask 8.5" 870
Three loads tested

Federal Powershock slugs 2 3/4" 1 oz velocity (5 rounds) 1144fps average
Remington Copper Solid 2 3/4" velocity (2 rounds) 1092 fps average
Remington Buckhammer 1 1/4oz velocity (2 rounds) 1181 fps average

Buckhammers had a lot heavier recoil than the others.

Cheers
