Do you really need a magnum

No, But I love pissing off old fudds when I tell them I use a .300winmag for deer and bear.

Guess again ..... Fudds have been using magnums for a long, long time. :)

Well, I could fit one more round in my henry 44 if I used special, but since I've never seen any 44 special for sale nor the brass I'll stick with the magnum.

The same “lack of need” virtual signalling applied to anything named Magnum, can be applied to those with more than 1 reliable hunting rifle. People hunt with bows; why does anyone need a rifle even? Just stalk closer, like a “real hunter”.... I’ve done most of my hunting with a 30-06. Now I often carry my wife’s T3 in 308. I shoot lots of 22LR, at least 50 to 1 more than centerfire. I also shoot a 375 and 300PRC. I enjoy seeing the same people that scorn my truck, being broken down because they are using their less capable vehicle for the same thing that mine is designed for. You know those green energy warriors in their 3000 sq ft house, talking about consumerism? Parts of this thread sound like church congregational meeting.

I know I could just ignore the lot, but myself and many other Canadians have been going with the flow for 25 years, and look where we are now.

If I felt the need, I would not hesitate to buy and use a magnum.

The question, do I need one, is properly answered “no.”

Although I have several magnums, my favourites for doing everything are not magnums. The 6mm Remington, 270 Winchester, and 35 Whelen are often my first choices and the underrated 6mm has been used to take a pile of big game including elk.

I concur with most here, its just a handle thats outdated. (Magnum)

Use what you want, just make sure the combo will penetrate into the vitals and stay together if you hit bone on the way there.

Don’t absolutely need a magnum but it is good to be sure for that longer shot you couldn’t with out a magnum. Piece of mind in certain situations.

My hearing has gone to chit so bad now that magnums and brakes are no longer an option for me, gotta save what I have left. Down to, and very happy with my 6.5 Creedmoor.

How do you define a "magnum"? Case capacity over a certain volume? Over a certain velocity? Because it's in the name? My .375 Ruger is not a magnum, its not in the name. Would shooters scoff at the .30-06 if it had been named the .308 Winchester Magnum? Magnum is a marketing word, nothing more, nothing less.

so true. there is some that need the power, some that want and all is good.

Here is the deal. Do you really need ANY firearm in this day and age?

Start bashing someone else's choice now and there may not be anyone left to defend your choice in a very short time.

I think most peoples idea of a magnum is something with a .532 or larger case head (magnum bolt face vs standard bolt face)

I would say most people do not actually need a magnum but just want one. As mentioned above though, what really defines a magnum anyway other than a name. Example 7mm REM. Magnum vs 7mm STW? I would say the STW is more of a magnum than the 7mm Rem. Mag. is. IMO most people don’t handle recoil well in anything much bigger than a 30-06 myself included. I have a 7mm Rem. Mag. in a 8 lb rifle and don’t want or need anything bigger. A friend of mine recently bought a Rem. 700 BDL in 300 Win. Mag and let me shoot it off the bench and I must say it was NOT a pleasant rifle to shoot, I suppose with a muzzle brake it might be ok. I would not trade my 7mm for it. Actually he doesn’t much like it either and prefers his 7mm rifles instead. I recently bought a Sauer 100 in 6.5x55 and really like it, specially for deer. Worked up a good load with the Hornady 143gr.ELD-X. My 7mm has not seen much use since I picked up the 6.5 Swede. What can I say, the Swede is sweet!

I don't own one but I can understand the utility of let's say a 264 Win Mag for trophy elk or moose at medium or longer ranges. And a 300 Win Mag or 338 if you are hunting in grizzly country or tundra.
Myself I have a funny feeling an 8x57 or 35 Whelen could fulfill all my hunting desires.

I'd like to see the new magnum rifles sales compared to non-magnum offerings. I'd bet they are way down if compared by sales ratio.

Variety is the spice of life. If not, there would only be a couple cartridges to choose from. I’ve heard and read about various arguments for and against. For me, I’m in the standard camp. I believe 300 yards is about max for ethical hunting, with most shots inside 100 yards. From here I made my choices according to what I hunt and where I hunt. I have 4 hunting rifles to choose from, from .22 LR to 35 Whelen. I’m covered.

I use to have a 338win mag, but sold it along time ago, before moving up here lol… then I bought a 30-06 that I still have, shot quite a bit of game with it including moose of all sizes, never felt under-gunned, bought a 9.3x62 last year for wood bisons, 30-06 is legal but I wanted something with more masse, not much more recoil than the 30-06 but a lot more hitting seems like !
We live in big bear country and I’m fine with the 30-06!
I keep my shots to 200m and most often inside 120m so no need for magnum for me anyway!
