Does it make sense to start reloading or PITA?

Well...I just happen to have 3 or 400 HP 158 gr Hornady's in a box in the loading room that I use in the wife's 35 Rem sillywet loads...no other use for them. They work but aren't perfect (shoot good but don't feed from magazine)...if you could find someone on here that would cast up a comparable # of .358 dia. 180 gr or close to it for you I would just trade you straight across, the jacketed slugs for cast rifle rounds

Edited to add: don't need to be lubed or sized, I have sizer and they will be powder coated.

Bad thing is that reloading can maKe you a hoarder.
I found 1800 fired 38 spl cases in their 50rd boxes that I forgot about yesterday.
Lots of depriming and case cleaning in my future.

Lol yupp. Bought a half dozen dies for 80% off when WSS closed, with the intention of flipping them. Sold one set, kept the rest... Now my buddy was given some dies from a friend who's father passed away years ago and I told him I'll hold onto them for him if he wants - two more die sets that I don't have an actual use for on the shelf... I haven't been at this long enough to forget about 1800pc brass though lol

So at the moment I only want to load .357 which I use for plinking ... I have an electronic balance and dies and as major equipment need press and power doser only.

BUT

Will this be something thats great in the US and constant suck in Canada due to parts and components not being in stock and maybe available in 2-6 months?

It starts with that I have been unable to find .357 HP bullets ...

Is powder a PITA to get here? Should be store bought in LM BC.

So I am hesitant to get into it just to be faced with a barrage of "not available" and "wont ship to Canada"

Teac

You're right, you shouldn't be reloading.

I like to think I save money, but truth is you don't, but you get to shoot 3 times as many bullets for the same price as factory. Considering a pound of powder has 7000 grains (for $30-$50) and depending on how much per charge, you could 1000 rds from a 1lb of powder @7grs. Campro makes boxes of 1000 bullet heads for around $140, primers are about $68 per 1000. If you cast (you next madness) you can even save more.

Even in Ottawa (1,000,000 people), I have 2 locations for most powders. So when I am out of town in Kingston, Brockville or head down the road to Hawkesbury, I always bring cash to what powders they have in stock.

Shipping costs for powders and primers are crazy so I stock up when on the road.

If you shoot more then 1000 rounds per year (me I shoot more), it makes sense to reload and it will give you quality control. It might take several years to recap your investment, but you will. Plus stocking up now on components will ensure price increases don't affect you too bad.

ok so here we go, trying to get:

- IMR 4756
- IMR 7625
- IMR PB (probably discontinued)

not in stock anywhere

thats the PITA I am talking about .... "Want this?" .... "Not in stock/not available in Canada"

I just fired my first ever reloaded rounds today and it definitely felt different and for sure more satisfying knowing the ammo I was throwing down range was crafted by myself. I also enjoyed the process of building the ammo but I’ve always liked tinkering. Be prepared for the first few times to take a while though. I was very cautious my first time and double checked measurements weighing every charge dispensed from my dispenser even though none of them were off by more than .05 grains. Took me 4 hours or so to load 50 rounds but I’m sure with practice it will become more efficient.

Really liked the feeling of firing handcrafted ammo knowing I made it myself.

Dodo soup can still be made with modern ingredients. :)

Just work up from from minimum charges of close burn rate powders with loads from a similar cartridge firing from a similar firearm that uses that new powder.

I can most easily get powders at Reliable.... None of the powders in stock there is listed on IMRs website for .357 but on the interwebz you can find load data... its quiet weird....

I am looking for a powder for low recoil and low noise for .357. I would assume that noise comes mostly with chamber pressure so probably should look for a load with low chamber pressures.

Do you have any powder recommendation? (its for .357 rifle)

I'm currently somewhere near 20,000 rounds reloaded. I shoot 338 LM, 458WM, 416 Rigby, 375 H&H, 9.3x74, 454 Casull, etc. etc., so well worth reloading due to the cost of factory ammunition. For 357 Mag, not particularly useful from a purely financial perspective unless you're doing it in volume, but, then again, what is actually logical about any aspect of a healthy love of all things firearms? ;-) "Savings" are the way we justify the expenditure to ourselves (and others), and what we gladly give back to the merchants selling us the supplies...

Even in common cartridges like 38 Spl and 45acp, reloading is worth it if you want target loads that aren't commercially available in Canada. I like the classic NRA Bullseye loads, 14gr HBCWC for the 38 and 185 gr for the 45. These are light, subsonic, accurate loads meant for shooting at 25 yards with one hand. Not available over the counter in Vancouver, or anywhere in Canada online so far as I know.

Lead or jacketed and what rifle are you using?

Lead or jacketed and what rifle are you using?

jacketed. 1892 in 20" and 16". so it wont feed .38 special and I only use it for plinking so loads of muzzle energy doesnt matter.

cost for powder doesnt matter, I am looking for soft and quiet shooting loads. 125gr or 168 gr bullets

I can get from Reliable: Hodgon, IMR and Alliant powder
