Doug's first mule deer

Edited to add..............Doug here, using bullcoon's computer, thought I was logged in as myself but I see that I am not.......

Thanks very much, guys. :D

The rifle I am using is a Remington 700 Classic with a Burris Fullfield II 3-9X40 scope with their ballistic reticle or whatever they call the semi-mil dot whatsit. I did have it at nine power for the shot. 8) The ammo, believe it or not, is old Winchester yellow box 180 grain silvertips!!! We did recover most of the bullet, in three pieces, but some other piece(s) had exited the chest cavity. I have my dies, brass, and some Nosler Partitions out here but have not made any new ammo here for it. I had shipped the rifle out in advance of my flight - and asked bullcoon to confirm the zero with the silvertips. He shot two touching at a hundred yards, so I did not want to fiddle with that. (BTW the rifle has shot anything I put through it with the same kind of accuracy... :D )

This morning Bob shot a very nice, heavy buck using one of bullcoon's rifles - a Remington 700 in 7 mm Rem Mag. I reckon that buck field dressed between 225 and 240, a very prime deer indeed. He is hanging in the tool shed and his hide is off, to cool him down a bit. The shot was apparently 200+ yards offhand at a quartering away profile, so that is two eastern boys doing some fairly decent shooting! 8)

We have taken pics but they will have to wait until Bob and I get to our own home computers to be able to download them.

Anyways, Larry and his wife Mary are fabulous hosts and we are having a grand time. They have allowed me into their kitchen a few times and so we had one dinner of stuffed baked deer heart, and last night I did up liver and onions. Very strange thing for me, we did not share the tenderloins "in camp" amongst the hunters - so mine are heading back with me to Ontario along with a cooler of prime venison. We have had fairly warm days here (plus twenty kind of thing) and below freezing at night, but it is too warm to hang the deer for an extended period. We butchered up my buck yesterday and it is in the freezer waiting for its plane ride home. (Yes Houligan we will do a swap when you get that fabulous moose sausage done up! )

Now we need to see Larry whale a monster buck, and show us easterners a thing or three.............

You will have a blast!!

get your liver ready if you team up with Bartell and Amphib!

It's kinda flat up there, though..You should check out some mountains in BC!
I can say with some authority, that Dougs liver is more than up to the task. Last time we got together, he was at least smart enough to go to bed, unlike a couple of Barr fellows I could name.

Can't put the pics up until photoshop has enhanced the "quality" of the antlers..... 8)

But I did get back home safe and sound about an hour ago, and the hundred pounds of boned-out meat that I brought as baggage also made the trip in fine shape. :D

AWESOME hunting trip, it has been 31 years since I hunted in BC. I reckon my next BC hunt will be less than 31 years from now............

Hi there rainman!

Yes Bob was using the older M700 in 7 mm Rem Mag, muzzle brake, quite the game pedigree........

Good Day All!.....Just got back yesterday from Larry's farm in Ft. Fraser....Had a great time , weather was perfect , and game was plentiful....until the wolves moved in that is.....

I did get a nice muley as well , not the big fella' I did get to see , but I'm plenty happy!

Larry was a great host , generous and helpful in spite of lots of farm work left to do before winter.

And yes it was a priviledge to be able to hunt with Doug too , funny and very "musical" if you know what I mean!
And here's something you would never guess , Doug has a great singing voice  ......And he never missed an opportunity to serenade us....

All in all a great trip , never seen so much game , we could have shot deer every morning and evening!

And I hope you all have a great year hunting and a safe one...

Hi Rainman: Yes , it was Phil's rifle I used , Larry told me the story of his old friend (now deceased for those who don't know) and all the game it has taken...Larry would have to address that himself tho.
The rifle is one of the old original 7mm mag Rem 700's with a stainless steel barrel , it has been customized by Bullcoon with a green painted stock and B-B-Q paint finish on the metal!...But what a shooter with Larry's handloads , a Hornady 139 gr BTSP....The bullet entered the deer's right side (it was quartering away) at around the last rib , angled forward through the vitals and I found it just under the hide after it penetrated the offside shoulder.

I do have some pics of the hunt as does Doug , but I'm still PC dysfunctional , don't know how to post them yet!

In the time I was there at Larry's farm , I saw more Mule deer in two weeks than I have seen in 25 yrs hunting Whitetails here in N.W. Ont! (I'm not the best hunter in the world!) So it was a thrill a day out west for me :D .....

Thanks,
Bob
