down to 2.....Sig P226R or M&P 9

I have loved all my SIGS and also loved the M&P's I've shot! They are both great... and I'm a 1911 lover! :D Nothing but great memories!

You will not be disappointed in either choice.... :D

Cheers,
Barney

opinions aside Sig is simply a better gun period. more battle proven, used my more defence forces etc, BUT when it comes to CPO's I would HIGHLY recommned you have an amourer look at it. some are near mint some have seen a zillion rounds. At the the end of the day buy what you like better, the smith is not a bad gun.

Is the Sig a CPO that has just come from Sig with the paper wrap still on? If so, it has already been closely inspected and refurbished by the Sig factory which has my trust. A CPO will probably not have a rail for attaching lights and things if that matters. They will both shoot great, pick the one that feels best in your hand, if you can't shoot both. Which would you buy, a Corvette or a Ferrari ?

I personally will go for the M&P if I am you. The main thing is the bore axis is lower on the M&P. Also the double/single action on the Sig is something I do not like myself. This is due to there are two different trigger pulls and weights to practice on. To me, less functions means less chances of screwing up.

The back straps on the M&P are a good thing for any shooters with different sizes of hands.

Finally, the cost of the two pistols is the real game changer for me. With the price of a Sig 226 I can get two M&Ps! This mean I get two more of everything with the price on one! I can beat up one pistol and save one for emergency with the same cost.

I will end with a side note for the M&P: Chris Costa & Travis Haley of Magpul Dynamic both runs a M&P.

Well.........no. Sig's are good, yes, but a Sig with a broken spring cup is a paperweight and they still make that stressed component out of plastic (Apex makes a metal one). Sig's require careful attention to strip and reassemble properly for major cleaning. It is possible to re-assemble a Sig, test it and have it not work with ammunition in it. Sig's will fail the same as any other pistol. If you look around on pistol-training dot com, you'll find a list of the failures that Tod experienced in one year when he was working for Sig - I was shocked. There is NO pistol made which will not fail.

That is my take as well...I like the SIG I own, but I have noticed that around here they are more of a status symbol than anything else. SIG has well-documented QC issues which developed since the middle of the decade. They are potentially a great gun - and specifically the P226 is the best of what they offer IMO - but there is no guarantee that you're buying something excellent. Try to see past the large number of people who will tell you that the SIG is the ultimate just because they spent $1500 on theirs.

Hell, I have lost track of the number of people I've seen write things like, "mine is perfect...400 rounds down the pipe and not one malfunction".

That is the equivalent of saying, "my new car is perfect...idled it in the driveway this morning for an hour, didn't stall once".

So be careful not only in what advice you take, but also in whose advice you take. The SIG is a good pistol; the M&P is also a good pistol. Not many people shoot enough to really tell you much about why one is better than the other, unless "feels really solid" vs. "feels plasticky" matters to you.

thanks for all the opinions, both super but decided on and ordered the M&P and will buy a sig next time. :D

100% agreed. i love my Sig just as much as the next guy. I didn't buy it for "to hell and back reliability". I honestly just for whatever reason liked it, look feel and whatever. I don't plan on freezing it in a block of ice, dropping it from a plane, then melting the remaining ice off with muddy swamp water shaking it off and heading to the range to punch paper. As long as you make a reasonable effort to clean, lube and take care of your pistol it's going to be just fine.

Good call on the "i've put well over 100 rounds through my Glock without a single jam" or the "The Sig is far more accurate than the Glock" and all that talk. You can read that stuff for hours and hours on end. Truth is unless you've been doing this a really really really long time and have put ALOT of time into this any of these guns are going to be far more accurate than you, me or the next. And as far as reliability all these guns are mechanical and have moving parts, they could never be perfect or "100% guaranteed not to fail" etc etc. Just think about what is actually happening every time you pull that trigger and how fast it's all happening......

Seems like you've settled on the M&P, your going to love it, great choice. I love mine, my only hiccup was in hindsight i liked the Sig from the get go over the M&P and that's how i ended up with the Sig as well!

Happy shooting!!:D

I own a Sig P226, and have 5,000-some rounds through it. It's out-frickin-standing, and I will own it until all of the components are worn and broken. I will replace them as necessary, and keep shooting it.

That being said, my next pistol purchase is going to be an M&P. Not because other people say it's good. But because I fired one, and it was fun to shoot.

Since you seem to have decided on the M&P, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Go for the SIG. I have had quite a few sigs in my gun buying escapades, I sold 1, a month later bought another one, sold that, bought another to replace it, and so it went on for 1 year. Now I'm going to buy a Sig 220 Platinum Elite and damnit I am KEEPING THIS ONE.

I had m&p 9 and it shot very nice one hole (3rds) from 3 yards. I also shot 226 in 9mm many times and trigger pull as an AS/DA is incredibly smooth. I choose m&p 9 due to my small hand, and now I have CZ 75 sp-01 tactical. Trigger pull was too hard but I modified it and all flawless now. I would strongly suggest you get Sig 226R or better model if you got a big wallet.
