Duracoat camo kits --*Completed *Pics added!**

The way you mesure your paint is OK, you can also use a graduated glass cylinder, the one you give medic for children, they are 4$ for 2 at the drugstore use one for the hardner and one for the paint.

I just whant you to save time and money my friend, the factory stainless from remington is not rough enough, they apply a coating over the factory stainless for more rust protection... If you sand blast it correctly, it will be dark grey, i have just blasted and painted a other R5 this morning, also, I have BIG DOUBT that the blass bead are strong enough to remove this coating...
At least, do a small surface test, like under the barrel hidden by the stock, if you let it like that, you will be able to remove the paint with your nail !!!! don belive me, try it.

Hmmm the problem is I don't have access to any sandblasting place. If anything I would have to use sand paper

I'm supposed to be starting painting today so I'll do a test piece like you say and see, otherwise I will have to sand it well with the sandpaper or something

I just got an email back from Anothony at Duracoat. He says the beadblast finish on the remingston stainless is enough for good paint coverage..

he wasn't sure about the coating you mentioned though, so what I'll do is go over it with some sandpaper to get the coating off then paint away.

I have a number of grits of sandpaper at home, 600, 300, 210, 150. I don't want to go overboard here either.

I'll still do a test though like you said, probably a good idea.

If all else fails I can still do the stock.

Good, do a test BEFORE,
sand paper do a good job for the paint to STICK but you will see all the lnes BEHIND the paint, test it too, keep in mind that the paint is VERY thin... If you have acces to a good air compresor, you can buy a cheap sand blast for about 15, 20$ (suction type) and a sand pouch, you just put the pipe in the pouch and then blast.... You better spend 30$ doing that then ruin your nice paint project my friend. This is what i was doing BEFORE i god my sandblast cabinet...
Look the difference here on the pic, this is the rifle of my wife, i have installed a muzle brake and coud'nt match the remmy finish so i have blasted the brake and a tiny part of the barrel, you can see that both stainles match WITHOUT the coating OVER it, is not only polished like ruger stainless... This is ONLY sand blasted, it's WAY less shiny...

OK I did my test coat on the barrel and at the same time Did the stock, bolt parts, trigger guard assembly and my base.

I just barely had enough to cover everything.

I may have gotten too big of an airbrush who knows.

My first coat is brown, will see how it dries in the morning. The paint looks pretty shiny at first but as it sets it gets more matte looking.

I'll start putting on stencils in the morning and get painting with the rest of the coats.

I'll check out the test coat that i put on the barrel tomorrow as well.

Second coat on now.. Black.

I brought the items down this morning and put on some stencils.

The barrel and action unfortunatly fell from its position last night so some of the paint chipped at the end of the barrel and some small other parts.

Sendero. I know what you mean by the paint coming off with the finger nail, but I also noticed that after 10 hours it is getting harder and harder to do so. I was also able to chip off some paint on a couple other parts too so it might just be a case of the paint still hardening.

I am trying to go for a somewhat accurate cadpat look so:

Brown went on first and I put a smaller amount of smaller stencils on as it is the least dominant colour.

I just coated with black, which will the the second least dominant colour,

Then I will do light green, then finally dark green.

Just finished the third coat: the light green.

I'm getting better at it I can tell.

The first coat with the brown I barely was able to finish the whole thing with the paint.

second coat I just finished with a little bit left over

and the third coat I had a lot left over so I coated my bipod lol and still had some left over to do another light coat on the stock

The stencils are great. I bring the parts down to the house and put on the stencils while I watch TV, its fun.

It is looking good so far.

It is.. just spent a good 2 hours getting the last set of stencils on.

I went a bit overboard on my last coat so it is pretty glossy in spots, so once I get the stencils off and the paint has hardened I'll be going over the rifle with some find sandpaper to matte it up.

I'm the most nervous about this last coat because obviously it is the last one that will be seen and I can't cover mistakes up like on the earlier coats.

I'm more worried about running out of paint than I am using too much. They really don't give you a lot, 4 oz per colour so for a rookie like me, that isn't much room to maneuver.

Have to strategize which pieces get painted in what order.

Ok last coat all done!

Got a nice solid coat on everything with some to spare. I also was able to do the far away spray trick that the DVD recommends.

That is at the end doing one last spray over the item with the gun much further away so you get lots of micro droplets that give it a nice texture.

Everything is drying now so at about 1800-1830 I will head up there and bring the stuff down to do the unveiling of the stencils lol.

I'm going to try and save as many of them as possible.

I also ended up with plenty of stencil left as well, not enough for a whole gun but enough to do some small items if I'm creative enough. I just have to cut more shapes out of the roll, etc.

I have my bipod, rail and monopod coming in the mail so I saved a tiny bit of paint to do those when they get here.

Yea I bought the "professional" brake clean stuff at cdn tire, in a blue/black can.

The only complaint I have with it was that the stuff came out in way too strong of a stream. It soaked the stuff I was spraying. I just stopped using it.

knuckle baby?

Ok all done!

Took me forever to get off all of the stencils, I put on lots of small pieces as well so there were lots of little parts to remove.

Plus I was trying to be careful so I could reuse some of them at a later date.

I took some pics, but the rifle won't be reassembled maybe till next weekend.

Picture time!

I didn't get my camera up to the shop till later on in the project.

here is the work area I set up. I had it set up next to a big window and it was open the whole time so when I worked I sprayed right out the window, worked well on keeping the fumes down.

Here is the gun I used, a Campbell Hausfeld gravity feed airbrush, cost 29.99 at home depot. the hobby brush at michaels was 35.00$ so better brush and cheaper cost. The gun itself worked awesome but the connections I had weren't the best so I was losing lots of air, but it wasn't really a problem:

Here is the stock after the second coat, black: I just hung it from inside the stock and taped around it: Looks like a 700P there!

RiflePainting001.jpg

Here is the setup I had for the barrel/action. I hung it from the recoil lug and used a grip to keep it from sliding off. I initially tried to hang it from the grip but it slipped off in the middle of the night. You can see some string around the trigger but it isn't hanging by it, that was just an emergency backup in case the other string slipped and the whole thing didn't fall:

Here I'm painting the third coat, light green: Looks really limey here but in reality it is a pretty good match with the CADPAT light green, and the paint darkens a tiny bit as it dries as well.

RiflePainting016.jpg

I'd have to say the most time consuming part of this is the stencils, I took my time to get them down well and also cut smaller pieces as well so it wasn't too chunky:

RiflePainting021-1.jpg

That was the last stencils I put on as the dark green was the last coat. here is what was left of the stencils. I have lots left and I managed to salvage a lot of them when I took all the stencils off:

RiflePainting026-1.jpg

And VOILA! It took me forever to get all of the stencils off, being careful not to harm anything as I was using an exacto blade to get underneath them.. Made a coupld tiny scratches but not noticable really:

I'm quite happy with it but I think I should have used a little more brown in the overall scheme.

It is pretty glossy right now too so once it is all hardened up I will go over it lightly with some sandpaper.
