Elcan SpecterDR out of the box

The US military wanted ARMS mounts on them. That's why they have them. The US military doesn't like the Larue ones because it marks the upper receiver up.

Really? But isn't LaRue gear on other optics? A little bizarre in my opinion... either way, my dislike of ARMS still stands. ;) I'm sure ADM could make a superior mount for that optic, and no 'marking the upper' issues either. :)

I did this review a while back on SR Optics from '45 to now...

Some points of note, here's my comments on weight:

I'm first going to do a few basic comparisons between the 5 optics. Starting with weight. Using my wife's weight watcher's scale from the kitchen, here's what they weigh:

646 g Elcan Specter DR 1-4
681 g Millet DMS-1
656 g Elcan C-79 (Gen IV)
706 g L2A2 Sight Unit Infantry Trilux
1077 g Telescope Sighting No 32 Mk III

The 681 grams for the Millet DMS-1 includes the Armalite Scope mounting rail I had on it at the time.

It's worth noting that the Specter DR is actually LIGHTER than the Elcan C-79 optic.

So....compare apples with apples...add the mounting system into your weight calculations and tell me how much heavier the Specter DR is...

Okay, two new photos of the red dot at 1x, using "night" IR mode (if it's dark enough you can see both settings clearly) 2/6 power, and 2nd photo using daylight, 5/6power. Poor moose (his name is Mel, short for Melvile, as in Melville, Saskatchewan). Kids love to ride him. Any questions? This is for illustration only, not showing my version of an ideal "hunting" shot.

I read about all the problems with the arms mount and still took a chance on them. Not a problem it fits great on mine. Although I haven't used this as much as I'd like I am still really impressed with the Elcan. Used to have an aimpoint but I love the additional magnification of the spectre.

most of the problems reported were by people who "heard it from another guy" or from a few guys in the U.S. who couldn't fathom that Canadians might have better quality gear than they do...and it was made in Canada..

there were a very few legitimate problems reported with the first generation mounts and that switching from 1x to 4x would cause you to lose zero, but both were either dealt with or easily explained..

the original ARMS mounts were pretty good but there were a few in the bunch with issues.... new product growing pains, problem resolved.

some shooters were zeroing the elcan 1-4x at 100m on 1x magnification when they should have zeroed on 4x...the difference in POI was off by a few inches if you zeroed at 1x and tried shooting groups at 100m using the 4x magnification, whereas a 4x zeroed optic stayed true at 100m on both 1x and 4x @ 100m.... again problem solved...

I had a chance to shoot my buddy's 16" AR with a DR on it and I was very impressed. We were hitting clays at 500yds with it using the BDC, not every shot of course but you could see the misses in the dirt were very close. The glass was very clear. If I could afford one I would have one for one of my AR's.
Very nice, you will enjoy that one.

Arms does make an adjustable lever now. I think it's new this year. I haven't had any trouble with any of my arms stuff fitting properly but could see it being a problem. Who knows how long it will take till elcan has the adjustable arms levers on their optics, or if they even will change

If the ARMS mount doesn't "fit" your AR properly, then your receiver is likely the problem... This optic was designed for the military, and adapted for the civilian market. The Military uses Colt/Diemaco spec rifles, not Norinco.

Actually, "the military" uses 2 specs for rails, the US uses the 1913 rail and many, many Canadian rifles have Weaver Rails, though by now some perhaps many Canadian rifles have 1913 rails too. Norinco, incidentally uses a 1913 spec rail.

I've picked up a used one since my last post and couldn't be happier with it. Fits nicely on both my AR's and my Swiss Arms classic green. Incredible optical clarity and great reticle.
