Honestly it depends on how accurate you want to be, and how far down the rabbit hole you want to go.
It sure is a rabbit hole. For competitors and others who need or want extreme accuracy, I would bet it's worth it to do lot testing and go with the best performing lot.
For most people and for most applications, it seems overkill. I settled on CCI SV for general use, and I don't usually use anything else. I'll play around with some better stuff sometimes, and the main difference I find is that it (I've used Eley Sport and Club) is more consistent with fewer flyers. For small game hunting, I'd go with the Eley, but for target shooting, I'm happy with reliable 1" or less groups at 50 yards. For other folks, they want more precision and that reliable 1" just won't cut it for them.
Cheers,
Neil
We have 2 classes at our matches. We limit the cost of ammo, so its not a land slide. Like having someone shooting SK rife match vs Center x. I settled on Eley sport as my CT sells it for 7.99.. So I go on days with 30x the points and or x amount when you spend this amount and normally can get a free box. Actually got over 290$ in CT money. Now its capable of 1/2" at 50. Now Contact does well at 100 in my apeture gun. With scores around 97/100. Its the best of what I can get local w/o paying shipping or driving 2 hours one way. For little gains.
How do you find Eley sport compared to cci sv? I tried a few boxes of Sport and was disappointed that it wasn't any better in my gun then cci. Maybe it was the gun just doesn't like it, maybe the lot was no good, but I was disappointed.
Alternatively, I bought some eley target (yellow box, with "Remington" on it as well) and that shot noticeably better. Can't seem to find that stuff anymore though, bought it at MagDump.ca a few years back, I want to say it was well under $10 a box. Haven't seen it for sale since and I don't even see it on Eleys website now though.
Eley Sport is the current version of what Eley Target was back then. If it doesn't shoot noticeably better than the CCI SV then it likely just isn't a very good fit in the chamber. CCI SV is not very good ammo, like, at all. It's among the worst out there.
Really?? I've compared at least a couple of brands of Eley and compared it (10 shot groups @ 50 yds) to my usual CCI SV and the CCI easily shoots as well for less money. This is out of my 10/22.
Different experiences I guess.
I guess everyone has different expectations. I've shot silhouette for years, and lost many a point to CCI SV fliers hitting very low. Try this test. Print one of these out at 100% (not "fit to page" because that resizes) and set it up at 100 metres.

Shoot from the bench, doing your best to put 40 shots dead centre. We shoot four matches on match day with 10 rams each, giving a total of 40 rams, so this will simulate that. CCI SV is very temp sensitive and does much better in the warm months. Even then I wouldn't be surprised to see 4-5 go low, but right now in the cold I bet you'll see a few more than that go quite low. Shooting from the bench it is a rather large target, and I'd put money on the Eley putting all 40 in the black. But I'd be surprised to see the CCI SV do it in July, never mind November.![]()

What is the height of the ram? I have had drops of several inches with Eley Sport.
But I'll try it in December.
Is that right? Sport and Target are the same thing just different names? If that's the case then my gun must have just liked the lot of Target more.
I could definitely see the consistency difference with Target vs cci, but never realized Sport was the same thing. Maybe I wrote off the cheap eley ammo too soon...
Thank you for contacting ELEY through our website, please find below information relating to your enquiry:
This year ELEY has re launched its product range, which features a rationalized product choice.
In the new product range the low end product has been branded Target which will feature a yellow label in the US market only, Worldwide this product will be branded as Sport in a green label.
Target is manufactured in England with the high quality production systems ELEY is renowned for.
Wanting to test the Eley Force and Contact and tried some RWS BBM and CCI SV just because they were there.
Contact had a cold barrel flyer so nine shots measured 1.44" at 100 yards but 6" low and 2.5" left.
Force is the high velocity of Semi Auto rifles was 5.5 low and 3" left measuring 1.25" c-c
BBM was 2.0" c-c but 5"low and 2" left.
CCI SV was the most accurate measuring 1.05 c-c and 5" low and 2" left.
This rifle was last shot at 100 metres using Eley TENEX so have no idea why the groups were where they were.
The rifle: Anschutz 1710 HB ES. The TENEX had been taken out of the case so did not have anything to reference it back too.
Did a two stage chamber cleaning to see if there was a carbon ring. Don't think I got it all so back to the drawing board and let it soak in.
The body itself is about 2 MOA high from belly to back, though the target's overall height is about 4.5 MOA.
Yeah, back in 2008.
So that gives you Eley's expectations from their test barrels, anyway. Shows how their whole product line is ranked.Eley actually lists the expected shot radius SD for all their ammo in their brochure, removing the need for any speculation as to which one should be better. Just don't forget, in every case it still matters whether or not a particular lot number gets along with your gun.
Tenex 3.75 mm
Tenex Pistol 4.05 mm
Tenex Biathlon 4.50 mm
