Embracing my Fudd Heritage

Go back to post #139 and read on to your fuddy heart's content!

The sad thing is that we could not even legally wear that get-up here in Sask when big game hunting. These "colors" laws are asinine. It should be, "wear whatever you want and be sure of your target and beyond". Saskatchewan the nanny state.

I loaded up some 165gr Hornady Interlocks with a moderate charge of H4895 and CCI #34 primers. Even put a little crimp on them! Tomorrow I'll go to the range (like most days!) and see how this load shoots...I'm sure it will be good enough for hunting at moderate ranges. In the evening I might go try to shoot a bear. I know this rifle has only killed deer and moose, no bears. First time this gun will go bang in decades! :)

This seems to have turned into a bit of a fashion thread! I apologize in advance but I'm not going to be wearing any proper Fudd attire. Most likely shorts and sneakers. Maybe throw on a checked shirt to get as close as possible to the plaid motif. :)

Dad is 84 now, so figured he wouldn't need his guns anymore and gave them to me. He hasn't hunted in a long time, but when he gave them to me out of nowhere I got really emotional. I guess it's recognizing that part of what your father was, is now gone.

Anyway, Dad is a lefty and back then there weren't any left handed bolt actions circa 1964, so when he won a sales competition at his company and they offered him a hunting rifle he choose a Remington 740 Woodsman in 30-06. They really knew how to treat top performing employees back then!

Here she is, in all her Fudd glory. Topped with a Weaver K2 scope with one of those T shaped reticles I can't even remember the name of. :)

I don't think the rifle has been fired in 20 years. I know I have never shot it. Even though I mostly use Barnes bullets these days, I won't sully it's Fuddness with an all copper bullet, I think I have some 180gr Partitions on the shelf, so I'll try them out. After all, Partitiond were pretty cutting edge back then!

If I can find a magazine, he has misplaced his for now. Actually, is there a source for these magazines? Hard to find Or are they pretty common? I'd like to hunt with it this fall, but in nice weather only. ;)

My dad owns and hunts with the exact same gun, he took the pivot scope off though
very nice gun.

The rifle shoots well. I zeroed it then shot a one inch group. Kinda funny using that old style post crosshair reticle. I guess they were designed so guys used to iron sights would have a familiar sight picture. :)

The bear didn't cooperate tonight though....

I put the top of the post on the bottom of the white circle of the target, to make sort of a "lollipop"sight picture. :)

And it was only one group, although when I was zeroing it, I shot twice and they both were very close together. :)

.... that old style post crosshair ....

... was very popular in the east, especially for those shooting deer ahead of the hounds. Very quick to put on a running deer and you could see it well at legal time, i.e., the the poor light 1/2 hour before sunrise & 1/2 hr. after sunset. Many Europeans were also in favour of the type of crosshair. Pretty common back in the day for low-power scopes.

Not too surprised to find the rifle groups reasonably well. Those old Weaver scopes were good and really, not so much wrong with the pivot mount. I used one on a 35 Whelen 7600 for years and was always pleased with the way it returned to zero. Still a bunch of manufacturers out there making QD mounts. Although I've never owned a 30-06, I did borrow a 7400 from my boss in 1979 and shot a pair of bucks with it, with 180 gr. core-lokt round nose ammo. Neither traveled more than 10 feet ! Factory open sights on that one.

Nice shooting considering the post on that thing probably covers about 3 MOA of the target :) Tip o the hat to the old semi too that's great accuracy

Not at all really when used proper. When set to hit POI, the Weaver post & crosshair scopes can produce nice accuracy on a rifle capable of such. I love these older Weavers in 2.5 & 4x for their quick acquisition and durability.
