Enfields

I bought a No 4 at a gun show a few years ago and its a US No4 Mk1* but scrubbed of everything original markings.
Original barrel length with front sight protector and bayonet lugs. The new serial number is on the receiver and barrel like the No1 Mk III.
It also has a Parker-Hale 5 shot mag and 2 groove barrel.
On the socket under the bolt handle is marked

Reacquired a No4 MkI I had refurbished years back. I had installed a Long stock just for myself.

You’re never too old to learn! I was searching through bayonet ads here on CGN and came across what seemed to me a very expensive bayonet for a No4 Mk1. I messaged the seller about the significance of his bayonet. He kindly educated me on the rare cruciform No4 Mk1 bayonet. After a quick google search for a good image I thought, that looks familiar! Sorted through my small collection of bayonets and there it was, a Singer cruciform bayonet! I had no idea it was any more or less special than the rest. It’s been in that box with the rest for probably 30 years! Wow!

Oh buddy that's a nice find, the No4 MkI cruciform and the No7 Mk1/L are the two expensive bayonets for the Lee Enfield.

What are the theories relating to this picture. To me, it looks like these gentlemen could be Cossacks of some group of partisans from the Eastern front, armed with No.1 MkkIII rifles (or earlier) that have been converted to 7.62.54R by replacing the barrels (say, with Mosin barrels). Note the way that the stocks have also been modified to go with the Russian slot-type sling mounts. The conversion looks well done.

What do you think?

Hi Steelgray. The rifle fully visable is a shortened CLLE (charger loading long lee) as evidenced by charger guide, cocking piece, hand guard,
location of rear sight bed, and foresight guard. It was a common weapon WW1 in the trenches. Chances are they all have the same. No Pat 88 bayonets as irregulars (especially Cavalry) don't need them. With thatch roof housing and such expensive clothes they could be Ottawa liberals
or any rabble. John

The Enfield thread seems a little quiet. Perhaps a couple pictures to get things moving again!
