Ethical hunting chalange

I need to start playing more with field positions. Not that I have any of my rifles in the same category as in the guys in the video, but still!
Go my moose this year at 270m from a kneeling position and he was running!
Luck perhaps… I don’t think so!
That said it is a much bigger target than a milk jug!

Nice, congrats

Successfully making a 500 yard shot makes you a good shot not a good hunter.

A person that stalks an tracks an animal for 2 hours and takes it with a 50 yard shot in thick brush is a better hunter than someone who just sits at a field edge shooting Coyotes at 400 yards.

One is a hunter, one is a target shooter.
yes and this is about shooting not hunting many times you get what you get for arrange not what you want so one must be able to qualify at all ranges

They’re one and the same, the two skills are interconnected. Being a competent target shooter helps you be a better shooter while hunting. Can’t say the same for a lot of the people I know that just shoot a half box a year trying to sight in and say “Good enough”.
There's guys on our 600 yard range that make incredible shots all day long but they can't worth a darn unless they are setup on a field edge or hydro cut and I know a guy still using the same box of 20 30-06 for 5 years that fills the freezer every fall.

In the context of the original post it's miwre about target shooting

Cortina mentioned that the kill area is more than 1 MOA, but you make it sound like everybody that is capable of a 600 yard shot doesn't know how or can't hunt and thst is wrong.
Everybody that was shootingbim pur match on Saturday was a hunter. Even the young 12 year old , and they all know how to hunt.i have always stated that Shooting and hunting are interconnected , one does not have to make any particular shot but when the shot is made the hunter owns that shot.
It helps to practice a lot at the distances Anderson intends to shoot at and because a person is a " good hunter" is no excuse not to practice.

Not sure if mentioned but these shots have to be made with a cold barrel to simulate a hunting situation

Post #5 explains our speed match at 500 meters on Saturday, and the guns were dialed at 1,000 meters so the shooters had to dial back to 500 before they shot. No rear bag but with a front bipod
There were no sighters. And the vast majority were able to put at least 4 on the 1MOA plate, and yes most were rifles that also get hunted and not just from a blind - not that there is anything wrong with blind hunting .

Everything changes when you have a live animal in your sites.
Taken many really good target archers hunting and they have stated they had no idea how much adrenaline affects you.
Had a few even drop from full draw on animals because they were so shaky.

And some are stoned cold killers as well regardless of the conditions are how fast and close the animal shows up

No fishing story there were 18 shooters there shooting under miserable conditions in a Match sponsored by the Legion .
We have some very dedicated hunters that shoot in our matches including last year's King of two miles team winners . 🙂

Do a guy a solid then, and get some video next time if you could. Whether I think it's a fishing story or not, seeing this in action would be awe inspiring.

I especially enjoyed the episode where the guy with the SKS, who is so confident in the beginning, could not hit the entire deer silhouette, much less the red circle, even once!
Thst guy was a moron!
I shoot with sling"n"irons and the biggest issue is being able to SEE a 1MOA circle at 500!!
I have made that same shot numerous times with several of my rifles (missed more than once as well) , but to see our plate the sunlight has to be perfect and the steel has to be painted a certain color.
My irons are also apertures not post front sights .
However the aiming point on a 500 meter irons target is 44" and I can hold 1MOA on that on a regular basis .

Being skilled at touching longer range targets adds versatility to an already good hunter.
Vice-versa many good hunters can't shoot long ranges. Unethical to someone who can't succeed such a feat and can't appreciate those who can. Not all hunting situations offer close range shooting.

Shooting steel at distance is rewarding itself..

I think someone may have made a video , not sure .

Try and get some vids at your next shoot, and I will be one happy camper lol. Some people are fast, some are accurate, but both at the same time is IMHO a much less common thing.

As soon as it warms up I will try and get that done🙂
One fella was shooting a monster Cadex in 338 Lapua . He hunts with it as well, and was 4 for 5 at 500, but the one he missed was just off.
That is a big rifle!
The winner was using a 6mmBR , second place was a Dasher I think.

It’s too bad we missed the shoot. I was all geared up and ready to go, but had something come up last minute or I would’ve been there.

I watched carleys video from the last shoot in the summer and she made all of the hits, but she wasn’t that fast. I didn’t check her time but I’m guessing it was over 20 seconds.
