As I was taught at a young age, most ethical questions can be answered with another question: What if EVERYONE did that?

Applied to the OPs question, the answer is clear.

If you put a bullet or arrow hole in the animal, that's your animal wether you retrieve it or not. Just because a hunter sucks at shooting or tracking it doesn't mean they get to keep shooting animals until they're finally successful.

Well, it seems as though I have 2 or 3 debating with me on that topic.
One of my favored sayings is " If you meet an Acehole in the morning, you met an Acehole.
If you meet them all day long, you are the Acehole..."
Seems as though things have gotten convoluted and I am likely the Acehole ( God, it is pathetic when folks can't back off).
Backing off and am respectfully contrite on the topic.
