Exotic 9mm ammo - pics updated

20 rounds.:)

And I have a few more boxes of the Black Talons (in 10mm) as well as some Norma 10mm 200 grainers.;)

If you ever want to share the 10mm experience with a fellow enthusiast, I'd be willing to pay an unreasonably high price and perform questionable acts for a box of each.

A buddy of mine has over 2000 rounds of .45 ACP, but doesn't own a gun in .45 ACP.

When I asked why, he said, just in case he gets one in the future.

See i only have 70 rounds of .45acp and I have 2 guns in .45:eek:

They tend to eat the ammo as soon as I get it:50cal:

I've got some more pics here, and some new additions:

First off, the two most bizzare new additions: Glaser Safety Slugs and CCI 9mm Shotshells. NOTE: I have looked into the law in this area, and both of these are totally legal to possess. They are not prohibited ammunition - and neither are any of the rounds in my pictures. They were all bought in Canada.

The box is saying an 80gr. projectile at 1650fps producing 484 ftlbs. Sounds pretty optimistic, but who knows.

If anyone is interested, hopefully you can read the back of the box:

Some "pest contol" 9mm shot shells. What is the idea here? Small birds and rodents... where you don't want to damage buildings or trees? Seems like a 20ga. is a lot more practical. Maybe that is why these are so uncommon.

This is the side of the box and the back of the box:

I also picked up some Winchester "Western" 95gr. soft points. The overall length is short. They kind of look like the Cor-Bon rounds in my other photos.

Also picked-up a box of the old-style Winchester Rangers, i.e. the "Black Talon" SXT bullet, without the Black Talon packaging.

Here is some comparison shots of some Winchester ammo:

Some close-ups following the same order. Note that there Ranger boxes are all slightly different:

The individual rounds, following the same order. Note also the slight differences in the SXT-type bullets. The Slivertip bullets look a lot more like the Federal and Remington high-end ammo to me.

If anyone has any unusual 9mm rounds I haven't shown, please feel free to PM me.

Ghostie,

Very interesting tread !!

How about Winchester 100gr Power Point (white / yellow X box vintage) ?? Also a note on these WW 95gr SP: jammomatics !! One of the main reason these were phased out were the jams they produced back then (with the available pistols back then) Then there's Federal # 9BP (old standard) and # 9BPLE ??

Is this tread limited to JHP ammo ?? I think I could come up with some interesting stuff ??

Koalorka,

Nice set of factory stuff. GunShows are to find such ``collectible ammo``

I'm gonna go back on the ``black talon`` stuff....As I previously stated this bullet was developped in the late 80s for some Government agencies that had been using one of Winchester's great 9mm round: 147grs Subsonic JHP. So the Black Talon was developped following the same guidelines but with a new bullet style. Pictures show the ``classified WCC load``, a WCC Black Talon (Govmt contract run) and a Super Vel +P for comparison.

A side comparison of the 2 WCC Government loadings:

A last note on these, Ranger SXT bullet IS different than the original Black Talon bullet....

Jacketed Hollow Points are the main subject of this topic but some others are also of interest. Thanks to Ghostie for showing us some Glaser Blue !! I'll mention some vintage ammo, collectible in itself, but ballistics that would sure enough put them in the ``exotic``class.

Here are a few samples of the ``infamous Schmeisser load`` as produced for German Armed forces in WWII. Produced by various makers, 16 rds boxes to supply both P08 / P38 pistols & the MP 38 / 40 smg's.

Lastly, black ammo for a ``black pistol`` 1942 Mauser produced P08 pistol (sorry I know it's an ammo tread but I couldnt resist !!)

Best to all, Mk

The only Canadian Tire in town has some .44 Mag shot shells if anyone is interested (or at least they did a few months ago).

I know for a fact that both of those are not armour piercing, also, neither of them are made buy Wolf (Russia), so they are totally legal to purchase and use.

If you ever get ahold of more of those Federal HST rounds, let me know. I've read many, many, many good things about them from South of the 49th. I've never seen them for sale here locally, so I think I might have to go out of Provence to find some.

Good thread, thanks for keeping it going.

ahh yes the evil Black Talon, I have a number of those (boxes that is). and a bunch of loose rounds as well. they are placed in special "anti-zombie" protection boxes to keep them from the walking dead.

Hydrashocks are like fishing lures. More designed to catch the fisherman than the fish.

I did an extensive battery of penetration and expansion tests on a wide variety of 9mm bullets a few years ago and posted all the results on CGN. I tried at least 16 different types of 9mm, some 357 Mag and 45 ACP as well.

I had a bunch of exotic rounds like 70gr frangibles, THV, IVI, IMI etc and we tried them against a level 2A kevlar vest as well as a leather jacket.

I have an absolutely perfect expanded Black Talon in my collection. :)

The best most consistent bullet I tried was the 147gr Golden Sabre. It opened up the same every time and was unaffected by passing through the leather jacket, unlike a lot of the other "exotics".

Disclaimer: The THV were donated anonymously and subsequently expended in testing so I don't have any live ones left. And yes they penetrated the vest.

THV? Out of the loop here...
