Expert advice needed for new M305 owner

I guess port alignment has to be nearly perfect. I could see light through the port before but evidently it was not good enough.

It has to be 100% unobstructed. To check with certainty, always use an appropriate sized piece of drill rod as a gauge (or a real USGI gauge). It either passes, or you have work to do.

When indexing the barrel, it is in the end, the Gas port that needs to be aligned at bottom dead center to the receiver. The feed ramp center point is not an indicator of correct barrel timing and should never be used as a reference point during indexing.
In a perfect set up..... the barrel comes to index between 80 and 90 foot pounds using parallel bars or levels on the receiver's rear sight ledge and the front sight base of a correctly milled flash hider.
Once the bars are visually level and parallel to each other, she is good to go.
To take it one step further would be to index with the parallel bars or levels as above and then final adjustment is made to ensure gas port is as close to bottom dead center as humanly possible.

So the dual feed ramps won't cause a problem if a little off center?

nope, they aren't exactly on center axis on any of my m14 rifles , this due to the how the bullets feed off the magazine follower. It is "by design".
That said, if there was a gross error in machining the barrel at the factory it could happen that the feed ramps could be out of spec but I've never had that issue with these rifles.
The correct way to time a barrel to an m14 receiver is to ensure the gas port is aligned at bottom dead center and if the barrel is machined correctly and the flash hider machined correctly, indexing the barrel as I described above, with levelling bars, is the correct procedure. Most installers don't verify gas port BDC like I do but it is technically the way to do it.

there are excellent tutorials in these M14 sticky threads on m14 barrel installation. Best to share this info with your chosen gunsmith.
very simple, must achieve 80 to 90 foot pounds of torque to index
and use levelling bars on receiver and flashider sight base
if you want a second point of reference to verify index, gas port should be at bottom dead center.
n bob's yer uncle ;)
