Extended Rail for MR1??¿

ATRS had my rail shipped by wednesday but I Only got it today as I was out of town. Got her installed (broke another t15 bit) and here are the photos. As you can see, I now have space for my 3x magnifier. Thanks ATRS. Good quality product.

Nice pics. I see you have the same issue as I with ejected brass marking the side of the receiver. Is there anyway to stop that marking or a way to remove them?

That happens with all autos. The big long scratch was me missing the mark on reassembly. The bar that comes off the back of the bolt carrier slipped of to the outside of the receiver and scratched it. I'm just going to touch it up with some paint when I remember to buy paint.

The ejected brass markings aren't a big deal as they dont scrape down to the metal. Its more aesthetics. Touch it up every so often. I haven't seen the velcro thing before, but I guess it would work. Another thing that comes to mindd is clear teflon tape.

On another note, my Vortex VMX3 is in the mail, so updated photos will be coming soon

Here she be, all done up with my new magnifier...

You did a great job on your rig. How do you like your scope?
Which surefire do you have on there?
What bipod is that? I like the bipod, but I wish they hat picatinny one that where 13-24 for my coyote hunting.

I like your forward ling mount as well. I have one of those kicking around. I'm going to try that out.

Really like the scope. Clear, smooth operation. The bipod is a Tango Down, works great without all of the springs, levers, etc sticking out everywhere. It's self centring for cant and swivels effortlessly. The sling mount is an American
Defense AD-BP.
The Surefire is an X300 with XT07 pressure switch. You can guess how it's mounted.........yup, with the original rifle scope rail. The Mesa Tactical cheek riser completes the project (mounted with Chicago screws) and places the rifle exactly where it should be finally. Bringing the rifle up now puts everything in position without all the fussing trying to get a comfortable shooting position.:D

I figured you used the original rail for your switch. I have to say, the solid stock looks nicer. I'm glad you finally made it work for you. The whole package makes it look like a solid medium range platform. I say medium because .223, and 4x scope limits effective range. I wonder now if I took my original rail and mounted it on the bottom of the foregrip to get the same effect you have. How did you work that railinto the original tri rail?

The bottom rail is from Magpul, a shortened 4" model. I trimmed out the centre of the rail to fit the curvature of the hand guard. It just so happened the thickness of the Magpul rail lines up perfectly with the Tri-Rail, allowing the AFG to slide partially onto both rails, providing a very solid mount.

All the fiddling didn't work out the first time and I ended up buying a couple different Magpul rails. In the end, it was worth the risks. The rifle ergos are now what they should have been from the factory, short of the screwy mag release position. That I can live with. :D

so what you are saying is that you just have the rail but up against the original tri rail. I assume you then cut mounting holes in the hand guard with your standard t15 screw with a nut on the inside?

I found the ergos to be really good out of the factory. At least when using iron sights or a holo/red dot. I like your idea more because it allows a bipod and a grip. I think a vertical grip won't work well with a bipod upfront.

I guess our next problem to tackle would be an improved mag release. I agree it is not the best, but I think I have less of a problem than most. I suppose when you pay this much money for something, you want it to be perfect.

Right, the Magpul is tight to the Tri-Rail. I enlarged the diameter of the mounting holes in the Magpul rail with a Forstner bit, to accept Chicago screws. A larger bearing surface makes a better connection.
You're right about the vertical grip, tried it, it sucked big time. You end up holding the rifle up rather than pulling it in toward you. The vertical grip just doesn't work with this rifle.
As I said, the release isn't great, but I can live with it. It certainly isn't the worst.
The rifle is where I want it now, no more tinkering.

Which vertical grip did you try. I don't like most vertical grips, but I like the magpul one I put on. It was only $35 making it cheaper than most. I find you can create very positive should pressure with it. The AFG however feels better in the hand

CAA (cheap crap), Tango Down, Stream Light (nice!) and a couple others. Just didn't work the same as the AFG simply because of the wrist mechanics.

Best thing on the list now is a replacement charging handle (knob). The original, in my opinion, is just too damn small for a quick and easy pull. Larger with heavy knurling, like the replacement M4 shotguns have available, would fit the order.

I actually find the end of the forearm to be very comfortable on my MR1. i wrap my hand under the sling loop with my thumb sitting in the curvature of the front sight ear. I just need to devise a forward sling mount on the LH side just infront of the action.
